Failing ambitions in New York: Is it too late for a strong Global Ocean Treaty? Part Two

Petchary's Blog

“Ambition” is a lofty word. “High Ambition” is even more inspiring. However, ambitions, once set, must be achievable and, if possible, achieved. Ambition is not a “well, it would be nice if it happened” word; it is a “let’s get it done” word. A High Ambition Coalition sounds like “let’s do it, together.”

Yesterday, I wrote aboutthe ongoing discussions leading up to a possible Global Ocean Treaty in New York. The talks conclude tomorrow. However, they have hit a major snag. The High Ambition Coalition for People and Nature, which aims to protect at least 30 percent of the planet’s land and ocean by 2030 (“30 x 30”) is faltering; and if it fails to achieve a Global Ocean Treaty (the coalition includes over 100 countries) then the 30 x 30 goal is literally dead in the water.

White House Orders Journals to Drop Paywalls on Publicly Funded Research – The New York Times

Academic journals will have to provide immediate access to papers that are publicly funded, providing a big win for advocates of open research and ending a policy that had allowed publishers to keep publications behind a paywall for a year, according to a White House directive announced on Thursday.

In laying out the new policy, which is set to be fully in place by the start of 2026, the Office of Science and Technology Policy said that the guidance had the potential to save lives and benefit the public on several key priorities — from cancer breakthroughs to clean-energy technology.

“The American people fund tens of billions of dollars of cutting-edge research annually,” Dr. Alondra Nelson, the head of the office, said in a statement. “There should be no delay or barrier between the American public and the returns on their investments in research.”

Perfume de escritor

Before laptop computers and smart phones, I used to keep “notes” and “write” text for both fiction and non-fiction in my head as dreams or mind films while traveling. I’d run and rerun them until I got back home and could then transcribe into my desktop computer.

Conspiracists have published a ‘frank admission’ by Brett Sutton about boosters. Here’s what he really said – ABC News

By some estimates, they initially offered 85-95 per cent protection against the original Wuhan strain, and upwards of 85 per cent against the Alpha variant.

ATAGI has since written that a booster dose “augmented protection against infection” from the more severe Delta variant and provided “a substantial increase in the protective effectiveness against symptomatic disease and infection” from the more infectious Omicron.

Professor van Zemm explained that the evidence showed vaccines did protect against infection, “especially in the first month after vaccination”.

However, he said, that protection was never 100 per cent in the first place, which meant that while vaccination clearly made a person’s risk of infection “much lower”, it would not protect everybody all of the time.

Long Covid keeping 2-4 million Americans out of workforce, report says | Coronavirus | The Guardian

About 16 million working-age Americans have long-term Covid and 2-4 million are out of work because of its ill effects, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution.

Employers have complained of labor shortages throughout the pandemic, and the analysis of data from the US Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey, which collects data from Americans through a survey on education, employment, health and housing, suggests one possible reason for the lack of workers.

The report found that about 16 million Americans between 18 and 65 have long Covid. Of these people, who are considered of working age, they estimate that 2 to 4 million are out of work because of their symptoms.
