Shrinking Horizons for Hope: Syrian refugees reflect on their priorities on durable solutions after a decade in displacement – Lebanon | ReliefWeb

Save the Children today released a new briefing – Shrinking Horizons for Hope: Syrian refugees reflect on their priorities on durable solutions after a decade in displacement- detailing the profound loss of hope experienced by Syrian refugee children in Lebanon who have languished in the country for years without any prospects.

The briefing reveals that the crisis is driving Syrian refugees in Lebanon to lose hope, and that for this reason their biggest wish now is to move to a third country, suggesting desperation is driving them to take riskier routes to secure their survival. Women in particular mentioned their hope to secure access to quality education for their children, and ensure they learn to read and write. However, the number of places made available by other countries outside the region remains far below actual need. For example, despite almost 600,000 people assessed to be in need, the actual number of places is no more than 20,000 per year[i]

…Save the Children is calling on the international community to increase access to quality resettlement opportunities and other safe and regular routes for Syrian refugees and refugees from other contexts in line with the commitments in the Global Compact on Refugees, as this remains the only safe and dignified option for some refugees and the preferred solution for many. This means countries, particularly in Europe, protecting Syrians’ right to seek asylum and improving safe access to third countries, including through educational programmes and labour migration opportunities. It is also vital that all countries respect and uphold the principle of non-refoulement and work to address conditions which may push refugees to return against their will…

No place like home: my bitter return to Palestine | Palestinian territories | The Guardian

…As Palestinian returnees attempted to rebuild their lives in the West Bank and Gaza, I had the equally daunting task of trying to find my place in Israel. So far, I had had almost no interaction with Israelis.

I did not speak Hebrew. I lived between my village and an apartment with Palestinian girls in Haifa, and I worked in a Palestinian company. When I went down to the street to buy lunch, all the falafel and shawarma shops were owned by Palestinians. When I got on the bus or bought something at the supermarket, and it was an Israeli driver or cashier, I just fished out my money and handed it over, not understanding the amount they were saying, just looking at the cash register to see it. They gave me the change and it ended there. I saw Israelis everywhere, but had a completely separate and parallel existence to them, and I was hit by a painful feeling, one that has never left me since: I was a stranger in my own country…

Myanmar beauty queen in exile gets political asylum; has received refugee status in Canada | The Star

Myanmar model Thaw Nanda Aung, also known as Han Lay (pic), has been granted refugee status in Canadan, after being detained at Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport last week, for reportedly not having enough documents to enter the country.

The 23-year-old beauty queen was wanted by the Myanmar junta Government for speaking out against the numerous crimes committed by the country’s Military at Miss Grand International 2020 pageant in Bangkok.

While in Bangkok competing in the Miss Grand International contest, the former psychology student spoke out against the coup, which ousted the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

She made headlines in March 2021 when she urged the world to “save” the people of Myanmar from the military, which had seized power a month earlier.

Last week, the Myanmar police were at Suvarnabhumi airport when Han Lay reported to the UNHCR about her situation hoping for an urgent resolution.

According to Thai airport authorities, Han Lay was denied entry into Thailand under Section 12 of the 1979 Immigration Act after an immigration officer spotted an irregularity with her passport.

A source informed the Bangkok Post that her passport may have been revoked by the Myanmar government.
