Heads-Up

From Behind the Pen

I was sitting in a waiting room yesterday, and as I casually scanned the room, everyone’s head was staring down at their smartphones. No head was looking up except for me looking at them.

The term heads-up is a message that alerts or prepares. Heads-up is used to call attention to danger or another important matter. Now, this is not to say that we shouldn’t look down because that’s how we discover and how we accomplish things. Yet, oh, how we miss so much, always looking down, hovering over a distraction that has us in a trance, and unable to tap into that present moment. Look up, take in the view, read the room, and discover something new and amazing today.

SCIENCE IS NOT YOUR ENEMY

NANMYKEL.COM

In an attempt to clarify another widespread misconception, I am exerpting only a small part of Stephen Pinker’s major article in a 1913 issue of the New Republic:

The humanities are the domain in which the intrusion of science has produced the strongest recoil. Yet it is just that domain that would seem to be most in need of an infusion of new ideas. By most accounts, the humanities are in trouble. University programs are downsizing, the next generation of scholars is un- or underemployed, morale is sinking, students are staying away in droves. ♫ If I Could Turn Back Time ♫ — Filosofa’s Word

I was at a loss for a song tonight, unless you count the Osmond Brothers earworm that our friend Keith planted earlier this evening!  So, it being after 3:00 a.m., and me having planned to go to bed no later than 1:30, I did a quick skip through my archives and found this one by […]

January 6th Committee And More … — Filosofa’s Word

Yesterday I watched what I presume will be the final televised hearing of the January 6th Committee.  At a few points I felt tears welling up, at other points rage took over.  I must commend the committee for they have done an excellent and thorough job, despite the obstacles they have had to overcome.  As […]
