♫ Isn’t She Lovely ♫
I’m not feeling well tonight, and I’m depressed by the latest election projections, the politics of the day here in the U.S., and I’m in need of me some comforting by the marvelous Mr. Stevie Wonder … so, I hope he brings a smile to your face as he does to mine.
Stevie Wonder wrote this song to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Aisha Morris, in 1975. In 2005, Aisha (last name: Morris, which is Wonder’s real name) sang a duet with her dad on his song How Will I Know.
Wonder collaborated on the song with Harlem songwriter and studio owner Burnetta “Bunny” Jones.
The song opens with the crying of a just-born baby. At the end of the song when Stevie says, “Come on, Aisha. Get out of the water, baby,” the splashing and protests (familiar to many parents at bathtime) are really her, recorded during…

Singapore Introduces New Healthcare Reform Plan
Singapore has recently announced a new healthcare reform plan that will shift the country’s healthcare strategy towards preventive care. The program is called Healthier SG and aims to provide a family physician and one health plan for every resident. The hope is that family doctors will develop strong relationships with their patients and play a more prominent role in preventive healthcare.
The change in strategy comes because Singapore is fast becoming an aging society, with one in four residents aged 65 and above by 2030. Further, the country has also seen a steady increase in chronic disease cases such as hypertension and obesity.

ACIP adds COVID vaccine to pediatric immunization schedule
The vaccine advisory group for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today approved changes to the child and adolescent immunization schedule, which adds COVID-19 vaccine to the recommended immunizations. The recommendation by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) passed on a unanimous 15-to-0 vote.
The vote came a day after ACIP approved adding COVID vaccines to the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, which provides free vaccines to children who don’t have health insurance or who can’t afford them.
Ahead of the vaccine schedule vote today, some media outlets falsely claimed that the ACIP’s vote would mandate the COVID vaccine for school children, according to the Washington Post. However, states decide what vaccines are required for school attendance.
States often use the CDC’s immunization schedule as a guide, but not all states require all vaccines that are on the CDC’s vaccine schedule. Currently, only California and the District of Columbia have COVID vaccine requirements for school attendance, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Few states require flu shots.

Ohio urges COVID-19 bivalent booster shots as new variants appear
New COVID bivalent booster should provide some protection against newest strains, experts say
But health experts say the new bivalent booster should provide some protection against the newest strains. The boosters combine the original COVID-19 vaccine with a reformulation that targets the BA.4 and BA.5 versions of the omicron variant.
“If you are not vaccinated or boosted, now is the time. You can acquire significant protection before these variants” take hold, said Vanderhoff.

South Florida residents recover from Ian, fault climate change
While overall hurricane frequency due to climate change is still contested within the scientific community, the consensus is firm that global warming is likely intensifying hurricanes.
Esther Mullens, an assistant geography professor at UF who researches precipitation variability, climate dynamics and climate adaptation, said the two primary ingredients for a successful cyclone are increasing atmospheric moisture and ocean temperatures, which climate change influences.
“We’re already seeing this, the systems get very strong very quickly,” Mullens said. “Rapid intensification in recent years has become quite a focal point because we’re seeing how fast these systems can ramp up when the conditions are right.”
