Shady contracts, backdoor deals spur illegal gold mining in Bolivian Amazon

  • In the northern regions of the department of La Paz, Bolivia, illegal gold mining has led to widespread deforestation and mercury pollution.
  • The Bolivian Amazon, including protected areas like Madidi National Park, face a growing risk of environmental destruction in the years to come from this ever-expanding industry.
  • Mongabay visited multiple illegal mine sites, interviewed the investors behind them, and reviewed their work contracts to better understand how the industry operates unchecked in secluded parts of the Amazon.
  • The investigation found that miners take advantage of the government’s lack of resources and slow-moving bureaucracy to avoid accountability for the harm they do to the environment; they also rely on illegal, backdoor agreements with well-funded foreign investors to maximize production.

Vote! Vote! Vote!

Diane Ravitch's blog

Every important race for the House, the Senate, even some Governors’ races are a dead heat.

If you haven’t voted yet, do it now.

Stand in line for as long as it takes to uphold our democratic system of government.

Many years ago, I read in a book about political philosophy that the great strength of a Constitutional democracy is that the losing side knows they can try again next time. They take their loss in stride, shake hands with the winner, and vow to do better next time.

The thesis behind this scenario is that losers graciously concede. They know that they will not be imprisoned or murdered. At worst, they will be remorseful and brood over what they could have done better.

Our system of government depends on gracious losers and magnanimous winners.

When Al Gore lost the presidency by 537 votes in Florida, he pursued his legal…

Musk Suspends Twitter Account of Leader of League of Women Voters of California

Diane Ravitch's blog

A reader sent this alarming comment:

The new Twitter in the hands of Elon Musk is targeting accounts that provide unbiased information the day before the election. This is not more freedom of speech at all. I got this email notice today:

“As the Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of California, you can imagine my surprise to receive a notice that my Twitter account was suspended with no explanation or reason. That’s right. The day before a Midterm Election, I am unable to access a once critical platform to monitor and share election information.

Should I be surprised? Maybe not. I am, however, undeterred.
Because I was not provided any explanation, I am left to review what I know. The facts.
I did not violate any Twitter policies.
I did not post or share anything to justify or necessitate a suspension.
I am a member of the…

Some Words of Perspective … — Filosofa’s Word

If you could use a bit of encouragement today, Robert Reich has just the right message with his Election Day thoughts.  No, he doesn’t promise that everything will come up rosy in the morning, but … he does put things into context, a historical context, that reminds us that even if it ain’t a bed […]

A Very Quick Note on Election Day

NANMYKEL.COM

Stumbling over an old Science News edition, July 30, 2021:

Because of the contentious issue of illegal abortions when the woman’s life is in danger, I thought I would share the following–one of several points made in this respected publication:

“Lawmakers in some states are considering abortion rules that apply to a fertilized egg.  That includes fertilized eggs that lodge in the wrong spot, the fallopian tube, for example. Called an ectopic pregnancy, it can lead to life-threatening medical emergencies when the growing tissue ruptures the tube and internal bleeding ensues.  “These are pregnancies that under no circumstances can become a healthy pregnancy,” Sandoval says.  “In fact, if they aren’t treated and continue to grow, they will kill the patient.  Laws that apply to a fertilized egg could ‘limit our ability to treat patients for ectopic pregnancies.”

Bird Flu Found in Another Flock of 1 Million Iowa Chickens | News | Ottumwa Post

A highly transmissible avian influenza was confirmed Monday in two more Iowa flocks, including one that has 1 million egg-laying chickens in Wright County, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

Wild, migrating birds are the most likely carriers of the virus.

“Migration is expected to continue for several more weeks, and whether you have backyard birds or a commercial poultry farm, bolstering your biosecurity continues to be the best way to protect your flock from this disease,” said Mike Naig, the state’s agriculture secretary.

The other highly pathogenic avian influenza detection was in a backyard flock of 17 birds in Louisa County.

There have now been four confirmations of the virus in domestic Iowa flocks this fall, including a flock of about 1.1 million egg-laying chickens also in Wright County about a week ago.

This year, there have been a total of 23 affected flocks, with about 15.5 million birds. Infected flocks are culled to prevent the spread of the virus.

It is not known to infect humans, but it is deadly to birds. Domestic flocks are destroyed once the virus is detected to avoid its spread.
