Yes, the economy is important, and the Holness administration is patting itself on the back, understandably, at the latest report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – which points out that Jamaica has struck “the right balance” in responding to challenges and what they call external shocks. Attention must be paid to climate change vulnerabilities and developing a much-talked about “green economy,” the IMF suggests, and strengthening education, crime-fighting etc. So far, so good.

Local commentators are pointing to the need for labour market reform, a decent public transportation system – and what of public sector wages? Teachers are particularly restive at the moment, as public sector wage talks have not yet been nicely wrapped up by our Minister of Finance, Dr. Nigel Clarke. Solid waste management remains a nightmare for many of us across the island. We are battling a rising tide of trash – mostly plastics. This is happening in our neighbourhood, and many others. While birdwatching recently we saw a Brown Pelican with a large plastic bag hanging round his neck. On a Sunday afternoon tour of downtown Kingston we were shocked to see garbage strewn all around the perimeter of National Heroes Park (made worse by the strong wind blowing). Even Simón Bolívar’s statue was surrounded by litter.

And so it goes on. But, fight back we must, and it’s great to see Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica back on stream, thanks to a grant from the UNDP’s Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme.
