Lady at the Temple Gate – Kaushal Kishore

By the temple’s gate, she stood alone,

A figure bent, worn thin to skin and bone…

At dawn’s first light and dusk’s last glow,

Her gentle plea for alms drifts soft and low…

.

In tattered robes, hands clasped tight,

Her eyes sought kindness in dim light…

I thought to help, with cloth and coin,

To ease her hunger, strife and groan…

.

When COVID struck, it locked each gate,

We hid behind walls, facing unknown fate…

When doors reopened, there she remained,

Wearing lines of sorrow, deeply ingrained…

.

On Diwali’s eve, I tried to bring her light,

To brighten her world, the lingering night…

But I wondered, what held her through,

Those empty days, when hopes were few?

.

Once, I asked her how she could cope,

What fuelled her spirit, stripped of hope..?

Why did her eyes still brim with tears,

After weathering those painful years…?

.

But one day, she slipped again from sight,

Until I saw her, radiant in the morning light…

Dressed anew, among devotees in line,

A transformed soul, with her life refined…

.

Georgia’s Raffensperger calls ‘illegal Haitian’ video ‘obviously fake’ – UPI.com

The Georgia secretary of state said Thursday that a post spreading on social media claiming “illegal Haitians” are being flown into the United States to vote for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in his state is false.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said the claim, circulating in a video on social media, is “obviously fake,” and probably a product of foreign interference “attempting to sow discord and chaos on the eve of the election.”

Songs I Like (81) | beetleypete

In 1964 when I was 12 years old, I heard a record by the British pop group, The Searchers. My dad told me it was a cover version, and he would try to find me a copy of the original, which he said was much better. Meanwhile, he got me a free copy of The Searchers’ single. (He worked for the company that they were signed to.)

He eventually managed to find me a copy of the 1959 original by The Clovers. I liked both versions but had to agree The Clovers had the edge.

See what you think, and let me know which version you prefer.

Ending Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a touch more pink – Petchary’s Blog

Earlier this month I celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a dash of pink – with photos contributed by dear colleagues from BirdLife Jamaica and beyond. Here is another splash, as the month ends… Enjoy, and please remember to know and listen to your body; get your health check-ups done regularly (not only mammograms); and look after yourself! By the way, this applies to women and men, of course.

Lots of beautiful flowers here, and – surprise addition to this photo gallery – since it’s Hallowe’en, here’s a lovely Jamaican bat! The critically endangered Jamaican Flower Bat (Phyllonycteris aphylla) is just ridiculously cute (don’t you think so?) This species is only from Jamaica & is currently known to be found In one cave in Portland. This species is colonial and roosts in caves, often together with other bat species. Posted by Wildlife Jamaica – follow him on social media.
