Há de ser leve

Um levar suave

Nada que entrave

Nossa vida breve

Tudo que me atreve

A seguir de fato

O caminho exato

Da delicadeza

E ter a certeza

De viver no afeto

Só viver no afeto

Há de ser leve

Tudo que me atreve

Lawyers with supreme court business paid Clarence Thomas aide via Venmo | Clarence Thomas | The Guardian

The lawyers who made the Venmo transactions were: Patrick Strawbridge, a partner at Consovoy McCarthy who recently successfully argued that affirmative action violated the US constitution; Kate Todd, who served as White House deputy counsel under Donald Trump at the time of the payment and is now a managing party of Ellis George Cipollone’s law office; Elbert Lin, the former solicitor general of West Virginia who played a key role in a supreme court case that limited the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions; and Brian Schmalzbach, a partner at McGuire Woods who has argued multiple cases before the supreme court. Giant sloth pendants indicate humans settled Americas earlier than thought | Americas | The Guardian

Dating of the ornaments and sediment at the Brazil site where they were found points to an age of 25,000-27,000 years ago, the researchers reported. That’s several thousand years before some earlier theories had suggested the first people arrived in the Americas, after migrating out from Africa and then Eurasia. Reservoirs Run Dry in Montevideo

The water supply for millions of people in and around Uruguay’s capital city of Montevideo reached critically low levels in the Southern Hemisphere fall and winter of 2023. The shortage occurred as two main freshwater reservoirs serving the region—Canelón Grande and Paso Severino—have nearly run dry.

Paso Severino reservoir, the larger of the two reservoirs, was estimated to hold just 2.4 percent of its 67-million-cubic-meter capacity on June 28. Increasingly salty water poured from household taps, and the government implemented emergency actions to provide citizens with drinking water.

California Takes Big Step To Boost Use Of Purified Sewage Water To Combat Drought | LAist

Why now: California law currently doesn’t allow cities to put recycled wastewater directly into municipal water distribution systems. Instead, cities are required to first inject that water underground into an aquifer, where further, natural filtration occurs.

What’s proposed: These new regulations would allow putting recycled water directly into the local water system, allowing more cities to recycle water that don’t happen to have an underground basin to store water, or don’t have enough space in groundwater basins because of past pollution, which is the case in L.A.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines recommended for fall boosters, Canada’s vaccine advisers say | CBC News

The country’s national vaccine advisers are recommending Canadians get another COVID-19 booster shot this fall, with updated vaccines expected in the months ahead.

The next round of vaccines will likely be monovalent — meaning they will specifically target the Omicron family of sub-lineages that are still circulating globally, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) said Tuesday.

Scientists at House hearing refute claims they were bribed and influenced to deny Covid-19 ‘lab leak’ theory | CNN

Dr. Kristian Andersen, who studies the genetics of infectious diseases at the Scripps Research Institute, testified Tuesday that in the early days of the pandemic, he first thought the virus that causes Covid-19 had genomic features that might have pointed to laboratory manipulation.

“My initial hypothesis was that SARS-CoV-2 was likely an engineered virus,” Andersen told the committee. “This was based on limited data and preliminary analyses where I had observed features that appeared to be unique.”

He shared those early concerns with Fauci, who advised him to draft a scientific paper outlining his theory. But Andersen said he changed his mind after learning more about these kinds of viruses.

“We soon discovered that those features are readily found in related coronaviruses, and the virus itself looks to be a clear product of natural selection and not actual engineering,” he said.

He said scientists often adjust their thinking in the face of evidence. It’s not a flip-flop but how the scientific process works.
