Peace & Truth – Ace News Desk – A new scientific analysis prepared by CONAHCYT, Mexico’s National Council for Humanities, Science and Technology, argues there are unacceptable health risks for Mexican people who consume genetically modified (GM) corn and glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide.

The 200-page document with 1,200 references – posted here for the first time in English – underpins Mexico’s 2023 decree to restrict the use of GM corn in tortillas and other minimally processed corn products, and to phase out the use of glyphosate. The U.S. challenged those policies as unfair trade practice under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). A decision in that case is expected imminently.

Whatever the ruling, Mexico’s new President Claudia Sheinbaum has saidher government will not allow the cultivation of GM corn. Sheinbaum also recently announced plans to try to place GM corn restrictions in Mexico’s constitution; “this is the best defense we have for biodiversity as well as for our health,” she said.

Judge upholds Naval Academy’s diversity-promoting admissions program – UPI.com

A federal judge on Friday upheld the legality of the U.S. Naval Academy’s race-conscious admissions program, agreeing it is in the U.S. national security interest to have a racially diverse military officer corps.

U.S. Senior District Judge Richard Bennett sided with the academy’s arguments that its narrowly crafted admissions program, which uses a prospective midshipman’s race as one of the determining factors, passes legal muster under a Supreme Court decision from last year banning affirmative action in higher education…

WHO deploys expert team to DR Congo to assist with undiagnosed outbreak probe | CIDRAP

Expert team is bringing medicine and test kits

Case and death totals have been shifting as the investigation evolves. The WHO today, citing the DRC health ministry, said 394 cases have been reported, 30 of them fatal. Symptoms include fever, headache, cough, breathing difficulties, and anemia.

The WHO said an initial local team from the WHO has been supporting health authorities in Kwango province since the end of November to help reinforce surveillance and identify cases.

In its announcement, the WHO said the new expert team will work alongside the DRCs national response team. The group includes epidemiologists, clinicians, laboratory technicians and infection prevention and control, and risk communication experts.

The team is bringing essential medicines, as well as diagnostic and sample collection kits to help rapidly determine the cause of the illness.

Matshidiso Moeti, MD, who leads the WHO African regional office, said, Our priority is to provide effective support to the affected families and communities. All efforts are underway to identify the cause of the illness, understand its modes of transmission and ensure appropriate response as swiftly as possible.”

Undiagnosed illnesses trigger illness monitoring in travelers

The outbreak in the DRC and reports of a potential respiratory component has led to heightened awareness of illness symptoms in travelers in some locations outside of Africa.

Hong KongCentre for Health Protection (CHP) said yesterday that it has stepped up screening for travelers arriving from two travel hubs where travelers from the DRC typically originate: Johannesburg, South Africa, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Yesterday media outlets in Ohio reported that a patient who had traveled from Tanzania to Cleveland had been isolated and hospitalized at UH St. John Medical Center for evaluation of flulike illness.

USDA says it will start testing milk for bird flu virus nationwide – Los Angeles Times

The federal order requires dairy farmers to collect and share raw milk samples for testing — if requested — by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It also lays out a staged testing strategy that will allow the federal agency to track and monitor the disease.

The National Milk Testing Strategy, which the new milk testing regimen is called, “is a critical part of our ongoing efforts to protect the health and safety of individuals and communities nationwide,” according to a prepared statement from Xavier Becerra, the U.S. secretary of Human and Health Services.
