Israeli government divisions burst into open as ministers ‘fight’ over post-war plans – Egypt Independent

The public sniping followed what one source described as a “fight” at a meeting of the the security cabinet on Thursday. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said there had been a “stormy discussion,” while former Defense Minister Benny Gantz said a “politically motivated attack” had been launched.

The developments illustrate the fault lines emerging in the governing coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after three months of war with Hamas. If the government collapses, Israel would likely face new elections that Netanyahu is widely expected to lose…

Just A Little Ranting Tonight … | Filosofa’s Word

It is a sad state of affairs that the Supreme Court is can no longer be trusted to “do the right thing”, to take their cues from the U.S. Constitution as they swore to do when they took their oaths.  I’ve long supported the lifetime tenure of the Supreme Court Justices, for as a student of Constitutional Law, I understood the reasoning behind it … that it would keep them from becoming corrupt, since they would not be forced to campaign or please partisan presidents in order to retain their seats.  However, today I would opt for limiting their terms to no more than two four-year terms, just as I would opt for term limits for members of Congress.

Trust.  It’s a funny thing, for it takes a long time to build and a very short time to destroy forever.  Rather like respect.  There was a time that I both trusted and respected both the Supreme Court and Congress, as branches of government.  Oh sure, there were members of Congress I didn’t agree with, but that didn’t have to mean I didn’t trust them or respect them.  But today?  WHEW … so different from 20-30 years ago.  Today, there are Republicans and there are Democrats … even those of us who belong to neither party, who consider ourselves to be Independent of partisanship, are ideologically bound to one or the other.

Supreme Court justices were intended to be non-partisan.  Naturally, they have their own ideas, likely vote for one candidate or another, but once they put on that robe and take their seat on the bench, they are supposed to be neutral.  In this, the year 2024, that is a myth.  The five aforementioned justices have sold their souls to Donald Trump and his wealthy donors, and the bond of trust has been broken … perhaps forever.  For me and many others, the Dobbs decision that significantly robbed women of their right to autonomy was the straw that broke the camel’s back.  If they couldn’t even get that right, the odds of them preserving the Constitution with this latest case are slim-to-none…

Haiku for the New Year – Gobblers & Masticadores

by Dawn Pisturino

New Year’s
New Year’s scurries in
On tiny feet, quiet as
A mouse at midnight.

Mercury
Good luck came swiftly
On Mercury’s flying boots,
A Roman windfall.

January First
January first
Brings new hope, new love, new faith
In a failing world.

Gifts
Gifts of gentle words
Calm the raging sea inside
Your turbulent heart.

God
God is larger than
The universe, standing watch
Over all of us.
