Scandinavian Winter Swimming Championships 2024 in Skellefteå

Logo for Helena And The Sea Photography a mermaid swimming underneath the surfaceYesterday I managed to do something I’ve been longing to do for a while. I photographed water sports in the north of Sweden in the winter! And what I mean by water sports is swimming in open water outside in -25 degrees celsius. It was wonderful conditions for photography, except for the cold, the sun was out and lots of white snow on the ground so there was lots of light which is always good when you’re taking sport photos. It’s easier to catch all the movement in sports.

It was a beautiful sunny day, but it was cold, very cold. I was dressed in lots of clothes because I knew I had to keep warm for a long time, standing still and taking pictures at the same time. The competition took place outside of the town of Skellefteå. You can find more information about the competition itself here at Vintersim.

दोस्त / Friend  – Kaushal Kishore

🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀

In pursuit of friendship, through paths unknown,

Wandering, searching for a companion to own…

Arrived at a river’s tranquil, expansive side,

Where my dearest friend in friendship did confide…

Humour in Language Nuances – Kaushal Kishore

Language encompasses the arrangement of sounds, gestures, and written symbols employed to convey thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Every being employs some form of language, yet perfection eludes us all. While imperfections can be embarrassing, they also provide opportunities for humour.

Not long ago, a dear friend shared a wedding invitation with me, and within its contents, a postscript caught his attention:

“Your presence itself is a gift. We don’t want any gifts at the marriage.”

He read it again and again, as he was confused. Finally he came to the conclusion, that he was not invited, and decided not to attend the function. He wanted second opinion.

He repeatedly perused the message, grappling with confusion. Eventually, he deduced he hadn’t been invited and opted to skip the function. But he sought a second opinion from me.

I asked him how close he was to the inviter. He revealed they were childhood friends. I remarked,

“Effective communication in English, or any language, demands careful handling as its nuances can express both favorable and contradictory meanings. Given your closeness, you can easily discern its intended message.”

😁😂😁

This brings to mind an anecdote I read years ago. I share it with a preemptive apology to my lawyer friends, even though I may not recall it verbatim.

A certain lawyer named STRANGE passed away. His spouse requested the tombstone engraver to inscribe a fitting epitaph on his grave, akin to:

“Here lies Strange, an honest man, and a lawyer.”

However, the tombstone engraver person expressed concern that the proposed inscription might cause confusion, leading onlookers to believe that three individuals were buried under the same grave. So, he suggested an alternative epitaph:

“Here lies a man who was both honest and a lawyer.”

The wife gave her consent. Now, as people pass by the grave and read the inscription, they often comment:

That’s Strange !”

😁😂😁

English is not an exception; tricky situations can be found in every language. That’s why I began this post discussing language in general, rather than focusing on any particular one.

In Hindi as well, such occurrences are common. For instance, if a baby was expected and someone inquires, “What happened?” A reply like बेटी ना बेटा could be interpreted in three different ways solely based on the placement of a comma:

बेटी, ना बेटा (Daughter, no son)

बेटी ना, बेटा (No daughter, son)

बेटी ना बेटा  (Neither daughter nor son)

So let’s embrace life’s imperfections, finding joy in the chance to smile, making our journey more vibrant and beautiful.

😁😂😁
