It is never lost on me, or other Black people, that everything that helps Black people, invariably helps others too. There is no policy that has been put in place in this country for Black people that others have not benefitted from also. We never think of designing anything that would hurt others.

Papine Market Dump Right Back to filthy – Jamaica Woman Tongue

KERRY CHEN PHOTO

…A successful mini facelift is supposed to last for at least 10 years. The improvement in the dump didn’t make it to even 10 days. The present state of the dump reminds me of the popular TV reality show “Botched.” Plastic surgeons Terry Dubrow and Paul Nassif attempted to fix all sorts of mistakes made by their less competent colleagues: eyebrows lifted out of alignment; lips swollen to an unnatural size; faces twisted; and on and on.

The Papine Market dump requires far more than a facelift. It needs to be completely overhauled. First of all, it must be relocated. It cannot be left facing the main road, which is named in honour of Sir John Golding, the distinguished orthopaedic surgeon who made such an outstanding contribution to Jamaican society. His son Mark, Leader of the Opposition, must ensure that Darrington Ferguson, the newly election councillor in the Papine Division, fixes the problem of the dump…

Open Letter to members of the Caribbean Community regarding a rights-based regional approach for the protection of Haitian migrants and refugees – Petchary’s Blog

In light of the foregoing, we urge CARICOM states to reform their asylum procedures and adopt a rights-based response to Haitians fleeing persecution, with strict adherence to the principle of nonrefoulement and the rule of law. This entails a requirement to establish effective procedures for the individualised assessment of protection needs and exclusion considerations that may arise in individual claims.

In addition, under the banner #WithHaitianRefugees, we call upon CARICOM – with the support of the international community and multi-stakeholder groups – to establish a rights-based regional approach to ensure the protection of Haitians on the move in the Caribbean, in line with their international obligations and principles of humanitarian assistance, protection, cooperation, and international solidarity.

In particular, we call for region-wide action based on four main pillars:

  1. Full and inclusive implementation of the Refugee Convention, including through the suspension of forced returns in accordance with UN non-return advisories;
  2. Access to territory and efficient asylum procedures; 3. Solidarity and shared responsibility; and

4. Durable solutions…

Of Course a Left Third Party Vote is a Vote for Trump – The Beautiful Mess by John Pavlovitz

…Practically speaking, a progressive or liberal vote for Cornel West is a vote for Trump.
A vote for Robert Kennedy Jr. is a vote for Trump.
A vote for NoLabels is a vote for Trump.
Any vote right now that doesn’t intentionally protect this nation from the MAGA movement is participating in it and putting generations of Americans in harm’s way.

The fact that so many refuse to acknowledge this is evidence that they haven’t been paying attention or lack self-awareness.

This same strident, selfish, and shortsighted attitude from Jill Stein supporters and Bernie or Busters in recent election cycles, helped pave the way for the dismantling of Roe V Wade and tens of millions of women losing their right to body autonomy.

That’s what bust became.
There was a cost to that stance and it’s now being paid by terrified young women throughout this nation.
It’s being paid by transgender teenagers.
It’s being paid by Muslims and Jews.
It’s being paid by migrant families.
It’s being paid by poor and hungry people.
It’s being paid by everyone at the mercy of a weaponized Supreme Court.

That’s what bust looks like…

Many progressives and liberals point to the perceived lack of response from the Biden Administration to the horrors in Gaza as their moral dealbreaker, a bridge too far for them to support him or his party.

I understand that position on an emotional and even moral level but not an intellectual one. I just don’t see any of these people playing the movie ahead a few months:

If they make this supposed moral stand in defense of Palestinians and Muslims, and in doing so help usher in a second Trump term—how is that good for anyone?

Which of the people they’re trying to help by rejecting Biden, will be helped by another Trump presidency?
Specifically who gains human or civil rights in this scenario?
How precisely is anyone safer or healthier, here or in Gaza or anywhere?
How is empowering MAGA Republicans going to do anything but further endanger Muslims, immigrants, Palestinians at home and abroad?…
