This elegant book – part biography, part memoir – subtitled “A Portrait of Service,” was launched on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at the S Hotel in Kingston. The author, Elaine Commissiong worked closely with the book’s subject, the influential businessman Sameer Younis (1942 – 2019), as his communications consultant. She writes with compassion and humour, frequently quoting Younis from her interviews with him. For more background on the author, a highly respected public relations veteran, you may watch her recent interview with Totlyn Oliver on Facebook Live, here.

At the launch, the cool, white room at S Hotel in Kingston seemed rather clinical at first; however, it was quickly filled with warmth, laughter and exchanges of greetings. Dahlia Harris was a delightful MC, and the Younis family were out in force, including of course Younis’ widow Leila, all celebrating the man’s legacy. A speech by Milton Samuda, Past President of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, had a sting in its tail. You can watch a recording of the launch on YouTube here.
Now to the book, published by a local publisher, Great House Books. The glossy cover is almost silky to the touch, but thick and strong, and the pages are equally thick and lavishly filled with numerous photographs and newspaper clippings (I love old newspaper clippings!)The capitals at the start of each chapter are elaborately decorated; it is a beautiful book to hold and look at. It is divided into broad sections on the life of Sameer Younis, in roughly chronological order: From Boy to Man (focusing primarily on his family life); the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce Connection; Sameer Younis – President of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (and Beyond); and finally, What They Thought of Him.

What is most striking about the physical book, however, is the portrait of Mr. Younis on the front cover: deep-set eyes, dark brows, and a firm set to the mouth. It’s a picture of inner strength, determination, focus: a man who “means business.” Yet at the same time, there is a glint of humour and kindness in his eyes. In the background are the balustrades of King Street in downtown Kingston – which my husband remembers well from his youth growing up in the area, as bustling, fashionable, vibrant. “You would dress up on weekends to walk down King Street,” to quote my husband. As the author notes in her Preface, the street “became the epicentre of many of the Younis-led Civic Affairs Committee initiatives at the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce,” serving nearby communities. In 1984, when the Pearnel Charles vendors’ arcade was opened, Younis invited the Minister of Local Government: “Come, let’s walk down King Street with pride.”…

The Patel family of Redwood City, California, has reached a significant milestone by packaging their one-millionth meal in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Rise Against Hunger. As described by PRWeb, their effort began in 2016 when Rohan Patel, then a high school student and Eagle Scout, volunteered at Rise Against Hunger’s Northern California location. Inspired by the experience, the family initiated the “Unite Our Community” campaign to package one million meals, achieving their goal five years ahead of schedule.
According to Diya TV, the Patels organized 55 community meal packaging events over eight years, mobilizing more than 3,000 volunteers from local organizations such as Boy and Girl Scout troops, Rotary Clubs, and religious groups. The packaged meals, which consist of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and vitamins, have been distributed to schools, orphanages, and crisis relief centers globally, providing nourishment to those in need.
