Thomas Goff Sums Up the Debate Best: Have We Gone Completely Nuts? | Diane Ravitch’s blog

Reader Thomas Goff posted this wise comment:

Yes, we live in a different world, one in which the decent man who holds our highest office is, in effect, now being asked to hand over the White House to a convicted criminal who will abandon Ukraine, kowtow to Putin, trash our environmental regulations, strip away the rights of women, BIPOC and LGBTQ people, and establish a right-wing dictatorship. Have we gone completely nuts?

Biden comes out swinging in first speech after presidential debate with Trump | Joe Biden | The Guardian

In what several supporters described as a “night and day” difference from his performance in last night’s debate, President Joe Biden on Friday vowed to keep fighting against what he framed as an existential threat to America.

In his first campaign stop following the debate, Biden showed off a louder and more dynamic voice at the North Carolina state fairgrounds in Raleigh.

“I know what millions of Americans know,” Biden said. “When you get knocked down, you get back up.”

During the 15-minute speech in a sweltering building that saw at least one person faint, Biden ran through a list of issues from high-speed internet to border security, but spent a good deal of his time denouncing Donald Trump’s honesty and integrity.

US sees more signs of possible COVID-19 surge | CIDRAP

Activity rises in West

On X yesterday, the California Department of Public Health said it is seeing an uptick in COVID activity in the state and it urged people to take steps to prevent disease spread, such as staying home and testing when sick, seeking treatment if positive, and masking when indoors.

COVID-19 test positivity and emergency department (ED) visits, considered early indicators, are up from very low levels. Nationally, ED visits were up 23.3% from the week before, with Hawaii in the highest category, and a few western states reporting higher levels than the country as a whole, according to the latest CDC COVID data. Test positivity rose slightly to 8.1% and is highest in Hawaii and western regions of the country.

Wastewater SARS-CoV-2 detections are still classified as low nationally, but trends show a steep rise in the West and a more modest rise in the South.
