“Hunting Street Children and Shooting Them Like Dogs” is NOT the Solution! – Egyptian Streets

I agree with you on one thing: a need for a government to show bravery. But, Sir, we are not cavemen, neither are we Nazi’s. Bravery must be shown by our governments in admitting they have not got the first clue on how to solve the problems that lead children to the street. They must be humble in admitting they need help from professional researchers and NGO staff to get together and find out what’s leading the children to the streets, why they stay there and they must be brave in investing money to trial solutions of monitored alternative care where families have abused their children out of their homes! This Mr Op-Ed writer is a far braver solution.

Below are a couple of photos of some of the street children I have met, none of them have committed crimes, none have raped anyone, none have HIV/AIDS, none are stealing anyone’s jobs. Does your suggestion for brave measures include ‘fishing’ and ‘shooting’ these little ones? Or will the cute ones escape the executioner?

White Bus Driver Concocted Attack by Black Youths in Dayton | Hatewatch

The department conducted extensive ballistics testing on the gun at the police academy on April 10. Investigators acquired eight copies of “The Message.” The bus company supplied several uniform shirts similar to the one Wagoner wore that day. Over and over lab techs fired bullets from the .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol gun into the shirt, the book and a gel substance simulating the effect of bullets ripping into a human body. Each time the result was the same. There was no miracle. The bullets traveled 15 inches into the gel, according to the Dayton Daily News.

U.S. Plans to Step Up Detention and Deportation of Migrants – NYTimes.com

<For what it’s worth – it seems that it must be that “coyotes” and a variety of organized gangs re probably helping to spread rumors about getting into US – via their paid services, of course>

The move comes as the administration is trying to quell rampant rumors throughout Central America that American border authorities are offering entry permits to parents traveling with young children after they are caught. Officials hope that by increasing the numbers of migrants who are detained and then deported, others considering the trek may be dissuaded from doing so.

France shocked by violence against Roma | Europe | DW.DE | 20.06.2014

The reactions in social networks and online news portals were often racist and included expressions of support for Darius’ torturers. “If the state can’t provide security, it’s only logical that people will practice vigilante justice,” one French Twitter user wrote. What dangers that view brings with it has become clear in the past few days.

To Fix VA Waits, Hire More Staff | Labor Notes

“I love the VA and would never work in the private system again,” said one provider. “I used to spend an hour or two a day on the phone with private insurance companies or writing letters to them… [At the VA] it’s not about making a buck.” (The agency tries to rein in press contact, so some providers asked us not to use their names.)

The real solutions to the agency’s problems may sound familiar. The VA needs to hire more frontline staff, fewer managers. It needs to update an antiquated computerized scheduling system, expand facilities where need is growing, and reduce missed appointments by offering rides.

It needs to use data such as wait time statistics as tools for improvement, not bludgeons. And it needs to act on feedback from concerned workers, instead of squelching it.

Unaffordable Health Care By Any Other Name | National Women’s Law Center

Imagine you and your spouse have an annual income of $47,700. It costs $100 a month, or $1,200 a year, for you to buy health insurance through your employer. That’s about 2.5% of your income.  It costs another $500 a month to add your spouse –— over 12.5% of your income. According to the IRS test, you and your spouse have affordable coverage because your coverage is only 2.5% of your income. It doesn’t matter how expensive your spouse’s coverage is – it could cost $2,000 a month and your family coverage would still be considered affordable.

Middle East “Expert” – US military force against ISIS in Iraq ‘is no longer avoidable’ – France 24

{Not volunteering to serve or be on any front line}

Paradoxically, the current conflict in Iraq and the changing geopolitical dynamics could accelerate the process of ending the civil war in Syria. To that end, the US must seize upon this opening and spearhead the delivery of weapons to the rebels to stop Assad from continuing his indiscriminate bombing of rebel hideouts while killing thousands of civilians in the process.

For this reason, once the US commits to preventing ISIS from achieving its goal, it cannot do so incrementally. All countries in the region have a common interest to bring an end to ISIS’ unseemly ambition. They must now set aside their differences and rally under American leadership to achieve their common objective.

Alon Ben-Meir is a professor of international relations at the Center for Global Affairs at NYU.
