NYC becomes one more city criminalizing Muslim youth and communities

It is incredibly silly. Linda Sarsour, resident badass activist and head of the Arab American Association of New York, pointed to the “criteria” the NYPD uses to identity terror threats. The behaviors that raise suspicion — at least when Muslim youth do them — include: “giving up cigarettes, drinking, gambling and urban hip-hop gangster clothes; wearing traditional Islamic clothing, growing a beard; becoming involved in social activism and community issues.” I don’t know how to describe this as anything but silly.

Sri Lankans disabled by war, forgotten in peace

KARADIYANARU, SRI LANKA, 16 September 2015 (IRIN) – Government soldiers can receive assistance packages for injuries sustained during the war, including the continuation of salaries for those able to work at desk jobs, or long-term care in military-run facilities for those severely disabled. But there is no programme to help civilians and former Tamil Tigers who remain permanently affected by injuries.

Police Union spin… Number of officers killed down. Number of civilians killed by police up. Being concerned about black lives mattering is not anti-police; it is about black lives mattering and responsibility for good policing

Those at the rally did not seem to acknowledge the fact that L.A. County police alone have killed 589 people in the line of duty from January 2000 to August 2014 —on average, one person per week.

Humans of New York

We were saved when they finally they put us on a boat and sent us to a camp on the mainland. For twelve days we stayed there before walking north. We walked for three weeks. I ate nothing but leaves. Like an animal. We drank from dirty rivers. My legs grew so swollen that I had to take off my shoes. When we reached the border, an Albanian policeman found us and asked if we were refugees. When we told him ‘yes,’ he said that he would help us. He told us to hide in the woods until nightfall. I did not trust this man, but I was too tired to run. When night came, he loaded us all into his car. Then he drove us to his house and let us stay there for one week. He bought us new clothes. He fed us every night. He told me: ‘Do not be ashamed. I have also lived through a war. You are now my family and this is your house too.’”
