On October 7, after less than a day of deliberations, the jury found DuPont liable for Bartlett’s cancer, agreeing with the defendant that the company had for years negligently contaminated her drinking water supply in Tuppers Plain, Ohio with a toxic chemical formerly used to make its signature brand of nonstick coating: Teflon.

Weekly Address: Making America Safer for Our Children | whitehouse.gov
We know that we can’t stop every act of violence. But what if we tried to stop even one? What if Congress did something – anything – to protect our kids from gun violence?A few months ago, I directed my team at the White House to look into any new actions I can take to help reduce gun violence. And on Monday, I’ll meet with our Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, to discuss our options. Because I get too many letters from parents, and teachers, and kids, to sit around and do nothing. I get letters from responsible gun owners who grieve with us every time these tragedies happen; who share my belief that the Second Amendment guarantees a right to bear arms; and who share my belief we can protect that right while keeping an irresponsible, dangerous few from inflicting harm on a massive scale.

Afghan Women’s Writing Project | Impossible Desire
I want to be born again,
in a place where there is peace.
I want to born again where I could live more simply;
where I would know the route for my life—
where I would be able to laugh and get excited
to ride a bicycle in the road,
in the rain.
I want to be born again;
and live like a bird, fly over the blue sky
free from every bond.
I want to be a singer
shouting my pain out of my heart.
I want to be a painter with a paintbrush in my hand,
painting the oldest tree of the city,
or a rainbow after rain.
I want to be a poet
disappearing in the world of words,
or in the village with small garden,
with a gray cat lying under sun.
But I know I will not be born again…
I was born in the shadow of war and
I will die in the shadow of war.

Israel bans novel on Arab-Jewish love story | News | DW.COM | 31.12.2015
Israeli author Dorit Rabinyan holds her novel ‘Borderlife’The book, ”
The book, “Borderlife,” by the Israeli author Dorit Rabinyan, tells the story of Liat, an Israeli translator, and Hilmi, a Palestinian artist, who meet in New York and fall in love. Eventually, they go their separate ways, as she has to return to Tel Aviv and the to the West Bank city of Ramallah.
“Intimate relations between Jews and non-Jews threaten the separate identity of each sector,” the Education Ministry said in a statement, adding that “young adolescents don’t have the systemic view that includes considerations involving maintaining the national, ethnic identity of the people and the significance of miscegenation.”
Preventing fruitful debate
However, many cultural figures in Israel, and even high school pupils themselves, tend to disagree.
“I know I may not represent the opinion of all the students, but I personally think it’s pretty stupid to ban the book,” Noa, a 17-year-old student from Haifa, told DW. “What happens now is that it created such a stir that our teacher is forced to talk about the book with us, because we keep asking her about it,” she adds.

Mimi Writes…….: New Year’s Eve 2015 ~ Praying In The Parking Lot
We illuminate our paths with decorations of peace.Whether or not that’s what we call it, that’s what it is. There’s much more good going on in the world at large than we give ourselves credit for. Keep lighting up your world, your windows, your gatherings. Make a pew anywhere you land. And pray wherever you sit. My New Year’s Peace Prayer was different this year. But I wasn’t alone. And neither are you. I’d say that’s just about perfect.

Ray Kelly Is A Greedy Liar: Gothamist
This fight isn’t a “spontaneous dispute over the veracity of the NYPD’s official tally of shootings and murders,” as the Times reports. It’s part of a decades-long dick measuring contest between two powerful men who hate each other, a feud that has wasted an untold amount of energy and public resources. (These two even fought over who was invited to their rival anti-terrorism conferences—Leonard Levitt has much, much more). The difference now is that Bratton is in charge of the NYPD, and Kelly isn’t.There are many issues Kelly could credibly raise to criticize the NYPD and inspire reform—on onerous quotas, on costly use of force, on its lack of female and black police officers, and yes, even on stat manipulation. This will never happen, because these are just as much Kelly’s problems as they are Bratton’s (he also seems to be missing some crucial emails). This is a man who continued to defend a Muslim surveillance initiative that generated no leads, who insisted on having free meals and membership at the Harvard Club, and who didn’t bother to defend his stop and frisk program in federal court but happily cut the ribbon at his friend’s new Applebee’s.
Rail Industry Again Given More Time to Install Safety System – The New York Times – Green light to risk killing more people in exchange for campaign funds!
When Congress in October gave railroads extra time to install a badly needed speed-control system, officials at the Federal Railroad Administration vowed to move aggressively to make sure the safety technology would be in place by the end of 2018, the new deadline. This month, Congress struck again. Tucked into a 1,000-page transportation law signed Dec. 4 is new language that could effectively extend the deadline until the end of 2020. And positive train control, a technology that safety advocates say could have prevented the deadly Amtrak crash in Philadelphia in May, could stay on the shelf even longer.

‘The Jungle’: Christmas in a Refugee Camp | Masha Alekhina

As a child you were told, “If you behave, Santa Claus will bring you a lot of gifts, and if you misbehave — nothing.” What is good behavior? Do not skip school to return home on time. And what would you say to Santa Claus if you’re not allowed to enroll in school, and if, instead of the house every night you go back into an icy tent?At Christmas you can dream of a miracle, or you can try to be the miracle for someone else.”To Avrist from Pussy Riot and the Belarusian Theatre” — I wrote on a white piece of paper and put a note in a black guitar case. Buying a guitar in Calais — that was a quest that deserves a separate story. The city only has one music store, it is not on the map, and all the others are closed down because they do not bring profits.Miracle — it’s not just a word in a book, but also your purchased ticket to the refugee camps, it is your gift, your two hours in which you listen to the story of one of the refugees because he wants to tell it. Miracle — it means not turning away someone you don’t understand.
