The Courageous Career of Slain French Photojournalist Camille Lepage · Global Voices

Conflicts on the African continent claimed another journalist last week. Camille Lepage, a 26-year-old French photojournalist, is the latest reporter to pay the ultimate price for trying to inform the world of the violence against unarmed civilians in the Central African Republic (CAR).

Lepage’s body was found on May 15 by French peacekeepers in a village near the town of Bouar, CAR, in a car driven by Christian militia fighters known as Anti-Balaka.

The Central African Republic has been marred by conflict since 2012 when the Muslim faction Seleka and the Anti-Balaka began warring over control of the territory. Lepage is the first western journalist to be killed in the fighting.

She specialized in photojournalism in Africa, notably in Egypt, South Sudan and the Central African Republic. She explained that her motivation was to cover news stories that mainstream media tend to ignore. “I can’t accept that people’s tragedies are silenced simply because no one can make money out of them,” she said.

Emotions ran high after the news of her death broke, especially among her colleagues in the news industry and in communities with an interest in human rights and African affairs.

Libyan irregular forces backed by helicopters on Friday clashed with former rebel Islamist groups in the eastern city of Benghazi

Libyan irregular forces backed by helicopters on Friday clashed with former rebel Islamist groups in the eastern city of Benghazi in fighting that left at least 12 people dead and scores wounded.

Troops apparently under the control of retired General Khalifa Hifter shelled bases of the Islamist militia Rafallah al-Sahati and another Islamist militant group known as February 17, officials said.

A spokesman for Hifter told Libyan television station Al-Ahrar that some regular military units joined Hifter’s forces in the attacks, saying they now controlled the two bases. This has not been independently confirmed.

Libya’s army chief of staff Abdessalam Jadallah al-Salihin told state television, however, that he had given no orders for any regular military units to attack bases in Benghazi.

Bundy Supporters Drove ATVs Through Native American Ruins – The Wire

Anti-Native American and Anti-Brains!

Both the BLM and the sheriff’s department came to the rally, but whatever skirmishes the ATV riders were anticipating/hoping for didn’t come to pass. The BLM simply recorded the proceedings to prosecute offenders later. The sheriff’s deputies said they were only there to keep the peace, and any punishment would have to come from the BLM, since “they’re the ones that closed the road.” Thanks, deputies.

Lyman won’t have to worry about any federal repercussions, as he ultimately did not drive on the trail. Bundy did ride on the illegal trail, but I guess he doesn’t think there will be consequences for his actions for some reason.

A Navajo Warrior ceremony for returning veterans was scheduled for the area that weekend, but the rally forced organizers to reschedule it for October. So the rally was a slap in the face of Native Americans from the past and the present.

“Damage to archaeological sites is permanent and the information about our collective past is then lost forever,” said Jerry Spangler, director of the Colorado Plateau Archaeological Alliance. “It is sad that irreplaceable treasures of importance to all Americans would be sacrificed on the altar of anti-government fervor. It is worse that protesters would be so blinded to their own insensitivity as to what others consider to be sacred treasures of their past.”

The Gun Report: May 7, 2014 – NYTimes.com

Last Saturday, 26-year-old Stephen Guillermo had just returned from a night of drinking when he tried to enter the fifth-floor apartment he shared with his mother and two younger siblings in the South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco. But he mistakenly got off on the third floor, and the apartment he thought was his belonged to Amisi Sudi Kachepa, a 68-year-old retired security guard, who shot Guillermo to death.

It doesn’t appear that Guillermo was able to gain entry into Kachepa’s apartment; he was reportedly shot while still in the hall. Kachepa was arrested on Saturday but released yesterday without charge, angering the victim’s family. Yesterday at a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, family members called on prosecutors to file charges against Kachepha.

“His fatal mistake was getting off on the wrong floor,” Emil Guillermo, the victim’s cousin, told the Board of Supervisors. Outside the meeting, he told reporters, “We shouldn’t make it easy for people to use guns without consequences.”

The victim’s family had lived in the apartment for 18 years. Stephen, the family’s breadwinner, was set to graduate from San Francisco State University with a degree in international relations in June.

South Carolina Neo-Nazi Couple Pleads Guilty to Murdering Sex Offender and His Wife | Hatewatch

“They got exactly what they deserved,” Moody said, as he was being led out of the courthouse. “Had to do it over again, I’d kill more.”

His wife also had no regrets or remorse.

“Killing that pedophile,” she told the station, “was the best day of my life.”

But if killing registered sex offenders was indeed the Moodys mission, they did not have to go outside the ranks of Crew 41 to find them.

At the time the Parkers were murdered, the head of group’s Colorado chapter was also on a list of registered sex offenders.

Gunman Shoots Six at FedEx Center Near Atlanta – NYTimes.com

“People in Georgia feel safer now that the Legislature passed a law that allows people to carry guns almost everywhere in the state!”

Police in northern Georgia said Tuesday that six people had been hospitalized after a gunman opened fire in a FedEx facility in an Atlanta suburb. The gunman then apparently took his own life.

Sgt. Dana Pierce of the Cobb County police said in a telephone interview that reports of the shooting in Kennesaw, Ga., came in shortly before 6 a.m. The police then quickly locked down the sorting facility, which is just south of the runway at the Cobb County Airport-McCollum Field. The airport, northwest of Atlanta, does not offer passenger service.

Israeli extremist tries to remove Palestinian flag, gets caught on barbed wire (Video) – Ads Against Apartheid | Ads Against Apartheid

“Why are you on my roof?” asked Sidr in broken Hebrew.

The settler, who had a Russian accent, also spoke in broken Hebrew as he answered Sidr.

“I’ve come to talk with you,” the settler said. As he spoke, he hung onto the building’s stone ledge, his shirt stuck in the barbed wire and his feet still on the ladder.

His antics attracted the attention of Hebron’s Jewish community, which gathered below to watch the spectacle.

The settler, undeterred by his precarious position, asked Sidr to remove the two Palestinian flags.

Sidr refused and asked the settler how he would feel if Sidr attempted to climb onto his roof to remove an Israeli flag.

“Would that be good?” asked Sidr.

“But this roof is my roof.

This is all mine, this is my country and my land,” said the settler.

“No. This is my house.

Why are you here?” asked Sidr.

“You just think it’s yours.

But this whole country is the Land of Israel,” said the settler.

“Hebron is not in Israel.

This is Palestine. I am not in Tel Aviv,” said Sidr.

“What is Palestine? It is only what the Romans called it. This is the Land of Israel. This is my country.

And everything that is here is mine,” said the settler.
