How did Sandra Bland die?

The Texas police, on the other hand, is 100 percent hoping we believe this young woman with no apparent mental health problems, who had just started a new job, who was outspoken in the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and whose brutal arrest had just been caught on video, committed suicide. Sorta like how they wanted us to believe Walter Scott had gained control of the cop’s taser before he was shot? Or that Freddie Gray was “intentionally trying to injure himself” in the back of that van?

A believer in the power of social media to make change, Bland can be heard thanking the bystander recording her arrest as she’s taken into police custody — custody from which she was never released alive. May Bland’s friends and family get the truth and justice for her.

Afghan Women’s Writing Project | My Pen, My Pride

Men of my country!

Fathers, brothers, husbands!

What can I write about you?

I am restless, impatient, tired

From telling my story and yours

Men! Throw away your knives

Don’t give me more scars

I am not among the devastated Afghan women

I don’t want my head covered by your cruelty

I live beside you — yet how far we are from one another

Hide your knife — I am afraid

Let me show you my golden heart.

Covered in my burqa, you make the world blind to me

In front of you, I am a woman, your slave, a tired face of fear

What do I mean to you?

I know the answer: A victim of tolerance, a friend of silence

Don’t make me known by your violence

I am not a picture of punishment

Never deceive me with your kindness

I am not a stone

I own my life, my soul, my body

I am empty of the love you took from me

I am still strong, a lonely mountain

I carry my pen, my pride.

Go Set a Watchman on Fire: Reddit and Ellen Pao’s Resignation

Then there was what many, myself included, hoped was the beginning of a new approach to harassment on Reddit. The site announced that it was formally banning five subreddits for fomenting targeted harassment that spilled beyond the subreddits’ borders. This included the fat-shaming forum r/FatPeopleHate (which does what it says on the tin) and r/ShitNiggersSay. In a move that surprised no one, these particularly odious forums became martyrs for the cause of “free speech” on the site. Their closure, further, led to the cresting of misogynist and racist hatred for Pao — rape and death threats, as well as fantasies of violence, came pouring in, and the “Chairman Pao” meme was generated, which quickly cluttered the front page and even became its own subreddit, r/ChairmanPao.

Brigitte Bardot: ‘I couldn’t wear Lagerfeld while feeding my goats’ | Fashion | The Guardian

What would you say in response to Karl Lagerfeld when he defends the use of animals by saying they are also exploited for consumption?

I doubt very much that Karl Lagerfeld eats much mink or fox or chinchilla. It is important not to mix things up; each battle must be waged in its own right. The farming of animals for their fur is absolutely dreadful.

Have you met Lagerfeld and worn his designs, and what do you think of him?

I live the life of a farmer. I don’t see how I could wear Lagerfeld’s designs while feeding my goats. I have respect for Lagerfeld as a man, but I would have so much more for him if he, in turn, respected animals. We do not live in the same world.

Despite the work done by such organisations as Peta and your foundation, fur is still popular in the fashion world. Why do you think this is?

Pride, stupidity or just plain ignorance have allowed this trend built on the lethal exploitation of animals to flourish once again. This is a war that we had won, or at least that we believed we had won, in the 1990s, since fewer people in Europe and in the US dared to wear real fur.

Learn To Dance With The Music Of The Storm. | Rebelle Society

There is music in the storm — a rhythm and flow to the way it rages.

The crashing of the waves, the strumming of nature’s guitar, the fall of the rain hitting the world like fingers pressing down on the keys of a piano, the howling of the wind a horn section blowing out funk, and the crack of thunder the bass and snare of the drums.

If you listen closely, you’ll hear the melody, the pulling, calling, challenging, daring you to dance, to move your feet and swing your arms.

Allow your spirits to be ignited by the rhythm and learn how to flow through with the storms of life.
