The Most Pernicious Form of Terrorism Threatening the U.S. Is the GOP | Dame Magazine

Women die. The GOP is not content to kill only women on American soil. By reinstating the global gag rule, pulling funds for UNFPA, and choking off funding to fight HIV/AIDS around the world (women make up over half of HIV/AIDS cases globally) will punish women everywhere. The god of the GOP doesn’t like women who have sex.The singular focus on abortion (a symbol of women in control of their sex lives and bodies) as anathema to the god of the GOP allows “pro-lifers” to sleep at night. Targeting “baby-killers” takes the thinking out of it. The truth is more difficult; analysis and empathy are required. Many women’s only contact with a doctor or medical professional is through Planned Parenthood and well-women clinics. Abortion, even when outlawed, does not and will not stop abortion. Women will die without access to safe legal abortion, Planned Parenthood, and other women’s clinics. You may ask, why don’t those women just go to another doctor? Who can afford to have the choice? The GOP hates Medicaid. Though they haven’t explicitly invoked their racist, sexist, classist Welfare Queen-esque statement, the policies are unmistakable, from the drug-testing requirements in the offing to states refusing to expand Medicaid coverage through the ACA. There is a swath of states in the Deep South that didn’t expand Medicaid, which meant women, mostly women of color and women in more rural areas, fell into the Obamacare doughnut hole. Which is to say, these women make “too much” money for Medicaid but not enough to afford health care through the exchange. Of course, fixing this part of the ACA isn’t on the GOP agenda—quite the opposite. Jesus, to their minds, is all about small government. Today’s GOP, the one born from the Moral Majority, embraces a fundamentalist interpretation of the right-wing Christian god they purport to serve. They are carrying out god’s will, very much like the Taliban. If shutting down women’s health clinics and blocking access to abortion doesn’t kill women, especially women of color, guns in the hands of domestic abusers just might. Stand your ground laws across the country will result in brown people dying; these laws are a license to kill. People of color will be swept up in the new war on drugs— the last war on drugs’ only accomplishment was incarcerating young Black and brown men, not only breaking up families, but forever taking away these men’s rights to vote. Voter ID laws targeting people of color along with gerrymandering will ensure reelection of god’s chosen legislators. And if all else fails they have this: You as a woman in this country have a right to speak. The subtext: Only if we dress a certain way, wear our hair just so, don’t cover our heads with scary fabrics, and balance an aspirin between our knees. Otherwise we are asking for it: rape, assault, hate crimes, incarceration, forced birth. The Taliban will blow our heads off. The GOP prefers death by a thousand cuts.

VP Pence’s No-Lady-Company Policy Is Not About Respecting His Wife | Dame Magazine

Horn-doggery and separatist prudery are just two sides of the same woman-hating coin. Neither man perceives women as human beings equal to men, they just express their limitations differently. Let’s call them the Goofus and Gallant of misogyny.Because of the feminist movement, we all know that sexual assault is wrong and reflects a hatred of women. But there’s still an unearned amount of respect for the flip side—the cautious avoidance of women, the kind of misogyny that seeks to protect, to put on a pedestal, anywhere but on equal footing. We are sacred or we are profane; we are not commonly understood by people like this to be human in the same way that men are human.Pence’s fear of women, or fear of his sexual impulses when confronted by a woman when he doesn’t have his prayer warrior on hand, isn’t uncommon in conservative Christian circles. I saw a lot of tweets and articles defending his “rule,” including at least two completely inane articles on The Federalist website, which not only defended Pence as a good husband, but also mocked the very idea of friendship between men and women. To put it simply, this is bullshit.

Allegedly Racist Fox News Finance Head Accused Of Mocking Breast Cancer Survivor’s ‘One Boob’: Gothamist

Among other accusations, Douglas claims that:Slater allegedly lamented that New York City is home to “so many more black people now than when I was a kid.”She allegedly described Douglas as having “black eyes,” and contrasted them with the blue eyes of the “Aryan race.”Slater allegedly complained about the “problem” of people of Indian descent moving to her town in New Jersey and turning the train she rides into the “Bombay Express.”She allegedly called Brooklyn, Douglas’s home borough, the “murder capital of the world” (Brooklyn, home to 2.5 million people, had 127 murders in 2016, or about 5 per 100,000 people. This is below the national average of 5.7 for cities in 2015, the latest year for which national data is available. Even Brooklyn’s most dangerous neighborhoods have murder rates on par with Chicago, which, despite the national headlines, trails Baltimore, St. Louis, and New Orleans, among others.)She allegedly told Douglas, who is of Panamanian ancestry, that she would not let her dog eat the foods Panamanians eat.Slater allegedly ridiculed Douglas’s accent and, as she allegedly did with the other two plaintiffs, mocked her pronunciation of certain words that she said black people pronounce incorrectly. At least twice, Slater allegedly kicked Douglas in the rear as she was walking down the hall, and she “regularly” rubbed Douglas’s hair to feel the “texture.”Douglas also survived breast cancer and had part of a breast removed during treatment. This too allegedly was a subject of Slater’s abuse. Slater allegedly told Douglas, among other things, “Your boobs look like they are different sizes—oh, that’s right, you only have one boob.” She allegedly called Douglas, “boobs girl,” the “one-boobed girl,” “and cancer girl,” and regularly complained that Douglas’s treatment drove up the office’s healthcare premiums. All of this behavior was sanctioned by Fox bosses at the highest levels, according to the employees’ lawyers, who note in the lawsuit that they and Slater worked on the second floor alongside now-former CEO Roger Ailes. Ailes was pushed out and given $40 million last year after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual harassment.

Trump & Co.’s Daily Assault on Women Isn’t News. It’s Our Every Day | Dame Magazine

I am thrilled because they are scared: Their racist, sexist comments and actions aren’t made by people of character or legitimate confidence. They are terrified of women, women in positions of power, women of color, and especially women of color with clout. I am even more thrilled because these comments, these slurs and dog whistles to the Trump base only serve to embolden women everywhere.

OPINION: ‘Sexism among women is still sexism. It’s time to stop dragging each other down’ – The Local

Sexism among women is still sexism. It’s prejudice and bullying. Judging another woman for her appearance, or because you’re intimidated by her presence or beauty, and discrediting her with other women and with men. These things seem to belong to another century, when women were burned for being witches. I spend a lot of time on social media – I’m a digital and marketing strategist – and I often have the sense that the media is like a pillory. The most absurd and painful case is that of Tiziana Cantone, a 29-year-old Italian whose boyfriend shared sex tapes filmed while she was drunk. The videos shared her full name and her face was shown clearly. Everyone, and I mean everyone, made fun of that video for two years. Even friends of mine. There were photo montages, Facebook pages, comics, parodies, songs, even people who profitted from selling t-shirts and mugs with her face or name. The ‘meme’ even appeared in the video of a song by Lorenzo Fragola, a young artist who won X Factor Italia two years ago. It had 20 million views, and the references to Tiziana was totally unnecessary. These memes and videos were everywhere – ‘ironic’ in theory but in reality, they were abhorrent.Tiziana moved house, because she could no longer leave the house, she changed her name, she attempted suicide, and her family made her come back home. Then she took legal action, but somehow lost it because of technical errors by the lawyers and an absurd justice system which denied the ‘right to be forgotten’ because the ‘news’ was judged to be ‘of public interest’. Then she was ordered to pay compensation. Days after the ruling, Tiziana took her own life. One disturbing thing I remember is that even then, after two years of insults from other women as well as men, there was a sense of ‘she had it coming’ even after her death. Again, this came from both men and women.

Why are Fringe Politicians So Obsessed with Morally Policing Romance? Hint: Follow the Money – The Ladies Finger

Do these party members really believe in what they say about women and marriage? A large-scale expose of right-wing politicians by Cobrapost and Gulail found, in horrifying conversations, right-wing Hindu men treating Hindu and Muslim women as property to be exchanged. “If she doesn’t listen to us, we hit her. We get her beaten up. We misbehave,” a Bharatiya Janata Party leader said about ‘saving’ Hindu women married to Muslim men. As TLF wrote then these men were using “marriage as a weapon of war”. The truth is that across the political spectrum the easiest way for aspirants to climb the ladder is step on a pile of women’s bodies. The thing is for small ‘parties’ or small politicians in big parties can there be an easier agenda than fixing ‘immoral’ couples or policing women.

Living in the Shoes of a Woman | nadiaharhash

To my surprise, the attack I anticipated from society never happened. The attack came from a place I never expected, from the place that was supposed to foster me, to hold me up.The attack came under the direct guidance of my mother. My mom who raised me to stand up for my rights, who educated me so that I could shield myself in times of need, then blamed me for the years that I was submissive when I was merely compliant to satisfy those norms I highly revered.I thought that the moment I told them that he broke my rib, they would break his head, but instead, I was executed and blamed because they believed I must have provoked him. The moment I told them how many times he deceived me, how many times I swathed him up to protect my family, I was censured and says I must not have been good enough. I thought that the moment I told them that he was locking me up, cursing at me, abusing me, that they would nurture me and open their shoulders for me. Instead my mother and family persecuted me.
