Missing Spanish woman María Jimena Rico: Spaniard who went missing in Turkey blames homophobia for her treatment | In English | EL PAÍS

The nightmare began last month. Jimena, 28, and Shaza, 21, have been together since the end of last year. On April 14, the pair flew from London, where they were both living, to Dubai, having allegedly been “duped” by the father of Shaza, who had told her that her mother was very ill. The Egyptian youngster had shortly beforehand told her family that she was gay. Once they arrived in the Emirate, they were greeted with alleged death threats, while Shaza had been reported to the authorities. “I know that her father loves her,” explained Jimena, “but his mind is so closed that he can’t understand [their relationship].”The girls managed to escape and got as far as Georgia. At the airport in the capital, Tbilisi, they planned to catch a return flight to London, but they were intercepted by Shaza’s father and other members of the family, who wanted to take her back to Dubai. An altercation took place in the airport, in which the police were involved. The authorities then took the two young women to the Turkish border.

To Everyone I Gave My Power To: I’d Like It Back Now. | Rebelle Society

From now on, my energy, my source of light, my power and strength will remain solely in me. I will still reach out and help care for you, listen when you need someone to talk to, hold you if you need to cry, and share in laughter that makes our sides hurt. But that is where it is going to end. I am not going to worry about your comments, second glances, critical words or looks.

I am not going to take on your problems as mine, or your goals and dreams as mine.I’m taking my power back. I’m going to bottle up all of my strength and energy, and focus internally until I can remember all of the dreams that I let disappear. Until I can feel my own talents bubbling up out of my fingertips. Until I feel like I am choking on love, beauty, and happiness when I can feel the love for me rise up in my chest.

I have given you enough of my strength to help you shine, but I’m going to take it back now so I can become my own sun.

The US Department of Justice is literally prosecuting a woman for laughing at Jeff Sessions – Vox

The trial will continue at the Superior Court in DC this week. If convicted, Fairooz faces a fine up to $500 and up to six months’ imprisonment for the laugh-related charge. She is also charged with another misdemeanor for “allegedly parading, demonstrating or picketing within a Capitol, evidently for her actions after she was being escorted from the room,” Reilly reported.Fairooz has a history of disruptive protests. During protests over the Iraq War, she put fake blood on her hands and confronted then–Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. This time, however, Fairooz claims she was not trying to be disruptive — but merely laughing. These details are all salient for the legal case, but it’s important not to lose sight of the big picture here: The federal government is literally prosecuting someone for laughing. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Justice Department — which Sessions now leads as attorney general — is doing the prosecuting when the laughter was directed at its leader. At the very least, it’s not a good look for the top law enforcement agency in the country.

Silence of a Chink: Collected pieces from a survivor of gang rape and suicide wrestling with her Japanese American identity: Stephanie Shiori Okuaki: Amazon.com: Books

Review: Not So Silence of a Japanese True Survivor! ByTaneyshia Flemingson January 4, 2017

It was well written and brought tears to my eyes. I picked it up and couldn’t put it down. Two glasses of wine later and I was finished with the book. It is hard to see someone write about so much pain and suffering, yet lives to tell you about it. This person is truly a blessing and a survivor!

A Delhi Private School Thinks Admitting a Rape Victim Will Ruin Its Reputation. Here’s What it Can Kindly Do With its Reputation – The Ladies Finger

Of course, it’s 2017, so we see a lot more demands for rapists to be punished harshly and for CCTV cameras to be installed everywhere, but what use is any of that if people still carry the assumption that rape is something that the victim and those associated with her should be ashamed of, or that tarnishes their “reputation” by association? That school can stick it’s reputation where the sun doesn’t shine, and since we’re being facetious, let’s just say that it’s very likely that this child and every child is better off in any school but this one.

No Bernie, There’s No Economic Justice Without Abortion Access

Here’s the catch: Heath Mello is a longtime opponent of abortion access who sponsored a 20-week abortion ban in 2010. It contained no exceptions for rape or incest. Mello has also co-sponsored legislation requiring doctors to perform medically-unnecessary ultrasounds, and he voted for a bill to ban insurance plans in the state from covering abortion, which would dramatically restrict access for low-income women. That’s not just “personal opposition”; it’s a clear, concerted campaign to restrict access to abortion.

Under heavy criticism, Sanders doubled down on his support of Mello, telling NPR that Democrats “can’t exclude people who disagree with us on one issue.”

But of course, Sanders is willing to deny his support to candidates who don’t support his economic justice agenda. Just this week, he bluntly panned Jon Ossoff, a pro-choice Democrat in a tight race to flip Tom Price’s Georgia House seat, as “not a progressive.”

In his fight to define what it means to be progressive and to “radically transform the Democratic Party,” Sanders has drawn an unspoken but clear distinction between the economic issues that animate him (on which he says we must not compromise) and reproductive freedom (on which, he says, we should). It’s a vision in which single-payer and free college are essential parts of the progressive, economic justice agenda, while a woman’s right to choose is not.

Woman Punched By White Supremacist In Berkeley Speaks Out: SFist

Fairly soon, the 5-foot, 1-inch Rosealma, who weighs 95 pounds, says she found herself cornered near a wall, and she says “I was just trying to block myself away from different people who were just pushing me and attacking other people.”Then, she says, “From the corner of my eye I saw this fist coming at me,” and she says “[Damigo] punched me on the bridge of my nose. It cut it a little bit. I got thrown down and I’m pretty sure he just ran [away]. I got right back up. I was punched twice more by two other people. People kept trying to throw me down to hit my head on the rocks that were in the planter. I was just trying to not get my skull cracked open.” She soon found her boyfriend nearby covered in blood.Rosealma was likely targeted because she was wearing all black and sported dreadlocks, trademarks of the “antifa” as the alt-right calls them, though it’s unclear if anything occurred prior to the moment caught on video to provoke the attack. And she wants to set the record straight about a Facebook post she wrote that the alt-right has taken out of context to prove that she was there to do harm. She wrote, “Heading to Berkeley to disrupt the neo-Nazi / white supremacist jerk circle today. Nervous af but determined to bring back 100 nazi scalps.” This was a reference to a line from Inglorious Basterds, she explains. “I guess no has seen Quentin Tarantino movies. I thought that was going to be obvious, but I guess not.” (The line, delivered by Brad Pitt’s character, is “Each and every man under my command owes me one hundred Nazi scalps. And I want my scalps!”)

Bombay HC Thinks This Man Didn’t Know Fire Would Kill His Wife When he Set Her Ablaze – The Ladies Finger

It’s one of those cases that leaves you absolutely gobsmacked. The Court actually believes that a man who set his wife on fire didn’t know that that fire would kill her, or did it with intentions other than murder. I used to think it was annoying when Courts and the Constitution would infantilise women in their phrasing and with the weird category of “women-and-children”, but this infantilisation of men is new and astounding to me. Everything about this case is infuriating from the get go: from the idea of a jealous, suspicious, insecure man who doubts his wife’s actions to the extent that his own insecurities drive him to set her on fire, to the idea that anyone, especially men in power who make influential decisions that shape legal precedent, can think that he had intentions other than murder when he did so. Hanumant Chavan is now convicted by the Bombay High Court of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
