Running out of ideas, Congressman suggests abortion restrictions as job creation

Let’s go through this here elected official’s path of reasoning, so we are all clear:

Restrict low-income folks’ access to abortion -> Those already struggling to make ends meet forced to have children they did not want (rich continue getting safe abortions tho FYI) -> JOBS!

Yup. It’s very very true!

Verónica sometimes can’t believe that this is real life.

Afghan Women’s Writing Project | The Dream Said

I remember my dream

saying: You are who you are,

Not someone who follows others;

You make your own path.

When you cry for help

the whole universe unifies to help you

accomplish your goals

to ensure what you want will be given.

These experiences you have along the way:

trying to learn something new,

trying to learn what this world is,

trying to learn who you are,

not always knowing the right or wrong direction

while struggling to find your quest,

hoping that one day the decisions you made

will lead to another place

where everyone understands you

and you understand yourself—

why you exist, what you can do.

You are a woman known as mother, sister, wife,

a woman who wants to find her own way.

You see you are not alone.

The whole universe is with you.

So the dream said.

And I say yes, I am awake,

I remember. I am

bringing my dream to life.

Chinese Feminist Activist Walks 2,000 Kilometers to Protest Sexual Abuse · Global Voices

Traveling alone on foot is still a new concept in China. While some women like the adventurous idea, they worry about sexual harassment on the road. That’s why Chinese feminist activist Xiao Meili started her new project: Beautiful Feminist Walk- A Protest Against Sexual Abuse to Promote Women’s Freedom.

Xiao, the lead actor in the Chinese version of the “Vagina Monologues”, is walking all the way from Beijing to the southern city of Guangzhou – a distance of about 2,000 kilometers – to protest against sexual harassment and child abuse. She has already spent four months on the road and along the way has been collecting signatures, staging performances and handing out information to local governments. She has been sharing her experience on her blog with photos, writing and drawings.

perfection

The Puerto Rico-born woman is only 25, but the international buzz about her just keeps getting louder, and shows no sign of abating, Latino Fox News reports.

Joan Smalls Rodriguez, born and raised in Hatillo, Puerto Rico, is the January cover of Elle Magazine, which has dubbed her no less than “the planet’s most perfect face.”

By putting Smalls Rodriguez on its cover, Elle shifted from the usual movie star in favor of a supermodel.

The magazine said Smalls Rodriguez possesses a “flawless, unequivocal beauty.”

New Jersey’s New Years Resolution: Tackle Pregnancy Discrimination | National Women’s Law Center

It’s 2014 and it’s hard to believe that pregnant women still face discrimination in the workplace. Many women can work through their pregnancies without changes in their jobs, but some women need temporary, often minor adjustments in their work duties or schedules to continue working safely during their pregnancy. Unfortunately, many times these women are being fired from their jobs, forced onto unpaid leave, or forced to quit when employers refuse to provide temporary accommodations for pregnant women to continue working without jeopardizing their health and the health of their pregnancy.

First day back to work in 2014 and New Jersey decided to do something about this. Monday, the New Jersey Assembly voted 77-1 (!) to pass a bill that bans pregnancy discrimination in the workplace, including by requiring employers to make the same sorts of accommodations for pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions that they do for disabilities, allowing pregnant workers to continue to do their jobs and support their families. If signed into law, this means that pregnant workers in New Jersey who need temporary modifications in their jobs to continue working safely during pregnancy—like, a reprieve from heavy lifting, or the ability to sit on a stool while working a cash register—will be able to respect their doctor’s advice without losing their paycheck.

The bill unanimously passed the New Jersey Senate in November, so now the bill heads to Governor Christie’s desk. Governor Christie has until Tuesday to follow the lead of New Jersey legislators and ensure protection against pregnancy discrimination for the women in New Jersey.

Afghan Women’s Writing Project | Listen to Me

Please listen to me.

Don’t tell me what I want.

Don’t tell me what my happiness is,

What the best is for me,

What you want me to do.

Listen to me.

What I want is different

From what you think

Is good for me.

I cannot be you for me.

Discover me instead.

Let me speak out.

If you listen to me,

I can change my world.

I can live the world.

I want my children to live differently

than yours.

I want to live differently too.

A forward thinker,

a taboo breaker, I think. I decide.

My unspoken words, sharp,

They compile in my throat.

I have shrewd thoughts of my future.

It is selfish

For you to impose your ideas, force

Your beliefs on me—I am

A girl of a different time, and

Times have changed.

I cannot live like my grandma did.

She was not for herself.

Her words died and were buried with her.

But I am ready for change.

I won’t listen if you don’t listen.

I shake the world with my voice.

A new day today,

We must listen.

You listen to me,

And I listen to you.

SPIEGEL Interview With Pussy Riot Member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova – SPIEGEL ONLINE

SPIEGEL: Were you treated decently while in custody?

Tolokonnikova: No. It was terrible. They tried everything to break me and silence me. The collective punishments were the worst, almost unbearable. Because of a small gesture, or when I asked the camp management to observe the law, 100 people were assigned to a punishment unit, where beatings were customary. I was treated better than others, simply because there was so much public attention. In my case, they did adhere to the eight-hour workday required by law. The other women were often forced to slave away for up to 16 hours a day.

SPIEGEL: How could the Russian penal system be reformed?

Tolokonnikova: I\’m not claiming that everything I say here is the ultimate truth. But this is what would be needed: more exercise, a broader selection of work activities to reflect the talents and propensities of prisoners, and decent pay, so that prisoners can occasionally buy something without outside support. I was paid all of 25 rubles a month for sewing uniforms day in and day out. In euros, that\’s the equivalent of 60 cents ($0.82). I would have been in bad shape if I hadn\’t received food packages. It would also be very important to prevent prisoners from harassing their fellow prisoners. And I also think educational activities are important. For example, why shouldn\’t prisons feature the occasional guest performance by a theater group?

Ultra-distance runner Kim Allen has broken the world record for running without sleep.

Kim Allen passed the previous women\’s record of 486km shortly before 6pm at Auckland Domain.

But she hasn\’t yet finished, and will try to continue to 500km, which she\’s expected to reach about 8pm.

The 47-year-old has been running for about 84 hours, after starting at 6am on Thursday morning, but has slowed to a walk in the final laps.

Supporter Michael Rodliffe said the record passed with no fanfare, as they were saving celebration for the 500km mark.

\”We kept it quiet, we haven\’t actually told her yet,\’\’ he said.

\”We didn\’t want her to give her an excuse to stop. In two hours time when she\’s finished the 500, we\’ll celebrate.\’\’
