Lindsey Coleman, the finance director for the campaign, then drove to the local Republican field office to return the money. Almost immediately, the man who identified himself as Rosales appeared from a room inside the office and was identified as Oscar. He accepted the money from Coleman. Speaking to the Guardian, Coleman identified the second man as a field organizer for the Arizona Republican party and said Ahmahd Sadia was not his real name. Neither the Arizona Republican party nor Wendy Rogers, O’Halleran’s Republican opponent for Congress, responded to requests for comment.
Why do Republicans think they can get away with such blatant lies? Partly it’s because they expect their Fox-watching followers to believe anything they’re told. But it’s also because they can still count on enablers in the mainstream news media. After all, why did USA Today approve this piece? Letting Trump express his opinion is one thing; giving him a platform for blatant lies is another. And as fact-checker Glenn Kessler of The Washington Post put it, “Almost every sentence contained a misleading statement or a falsehood.” Even the president of the United States isn’t entitled to his own facts. So will the G.O.P.’s Big Lie on health care work? We’ll find out in a few weeks.
Hitler, addressing workers at the Siemens Dynamo Works in Berlin in November 1933, railed against a “small, rootless, international clique”. They are “the people who are at home both nowhere and everywhere, who do not have anywhere a soil on which they have grown up, but who live in Berlin today, in Brussels tomorrow, Paris the day after that, and then again in Prague or Vienna or London, and who feel at home everywhere,” he said, as a man in the audience shouts “the Jews!” Historian Michael Wolffsohn said it was no accident Gauland had written his column in this manner. “It is bad that Gauland is signalling to his educated followers that he knows the speech and style of Hitler’s speech and that he is transferring Hitler’s accusations against the Jews to the opponents of the AfD today,” said Wolffsohn.
The campaign official, Rick Gates, sought one proposal to use bogus personas to target and sway 5,000 delegates to the 2016 Republican National Convention by attacking Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, Mr. Trump’s main opponent at the time. Another proposal describes opposition research and “complementary intelligence activities” about Mrs. Clinton and people close to her, according to copies of the proposals obtained by The New York Times and interviews with four people involved in creating the documents.
In the preceding report from the current investigation into the two suspects in the Skripals poisoning case, Bellingcat and its reporting partner the Insider disclosed the identity of one of the two suspects. The person travelling under the alias of Ruslan Boshirov was identified as GRU’s Col. Anatoliy Chepiga, recipient of Russia’s highest state award….
For political gain, the Republicans have blurred the lines between independent branches of government on the bet that their voters will reward them with another term or two in office. They may be right. Republican voters may think that the end justifies the means. But, there are more Democratic and Independent voters than Republicans, and many of those may think that the long-term damage to our form of government is a too high a price to bear. Moderate women voters are the most likely to revolt against the Republicans for their callous responses to accusations of assault, especially given Trump’s mocking of Dr. Ford this week. The #metoo movement has made great strides to protect women from abuse, but now Trump and the Republicans are pushing right back on those efforts. With elections only five weeks away, voters will have an opportunity to show how they feel about the political machinations going on, and they will have the last word on who wins and who loses. If voters don’t recoil from the current political environment, we should all brace for more vitriol and corrosive political maneuvers in the future. Left unchecked, the convergence of the three branches of government co
