Inoreader – EID Journal: Higher Viral Load of Emerging Norovirus GII.P16-GII.2

Globally, particularly in developing countries, Norovirus infections may claim 50,000 children’s lives each year (cite).  One of the keys to prevention is good hand hygiene, unfortunately, unlike with many other bacteria and viruses, alcohol gel doesn’t do a particularly good job of killing the virus (see CMAJ: Hand Sanitizers May Be `Suboptimal’ For Preventing Norovirus).

Opinion | I’m a Democrat and a Feminist. And I Support Betsy DeVos’s Title IX Reforms. – The New York Times “And a pretty good liar to get noticed by DeVos” Would have you believe most claims of abuse are “made up”

Consider this scenario: A young black man enrolls at a state university in California on an athletic scholarship. He’s the first person in his family to go to college. His teammate’s white ex-girlfriend matches with him on Tinder, comes to his apartment, has sex with him and, they both agree, returns three days later to have consensual sex. Weeks later, the young woman, who has reconciled with her boyfriend, claims the Tinder match raped her during the first sexual encounter. The Tinder Match adamantly denies this. Her boyfriend, who is also black, says she is lying. There is no hearing, no chance for the accused to ask her questions.

More Ebola in DRC as WHO says it has outbreak ‘covered’ | CIDRAP – Trump US Government “afraid” to help stop Ebola outbreak.

In September the US State Department under White House orders pulled US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) staff and other personnel from the region citing local violence and security concerns. CDC Director Robert Redfield, MD, has gone on record saying he disagrees with the decision. The CDC is currently sharing data and analysis with the WHO. “We can mobilize from other parts, from those institutions who don’t have very strict security provisions like that,” Tedros told reporters at WHO headquarters, the AP said. “We can cover it.”

This abortion law isn’t what Ireland voted for | Emer O’Toole | Opinion | The Guardian

The three-day wait is a political concession that has no basis in best medical practice or clinical evidence. Its only purpose is to make access to care more difficult. And, as always, the most vulnerable will be the most affected – people with disabilities, single parents, people suffering partner abuse, people in precarious employment, people on low incomes, people who live in remote areas, and asylum seekers in Direct Provision facilities will all find it much harder to attend multiple appointments.

In the Trump era, a lighter shade of Latino can make life easier – Los Angeles Times

The day after President Trump’s election in 2016 — according to Documenting Hate, a project that tracks bias incidents around the country — a student reportedly told a seventh-grade girl in Clarksburg, W.Va., “You’re going back to Mexico now.” The girl’s father is Native American and she is not of Mexican descent. Her skin is darker, the report noted. Later that month, a woman reported that she was in line at a grocery store in Austin, Texas, when an older man picked up a newspaper with a picture of a Latino man. “Trump is going to get rid of you people,” she said he exclaimed before shaking the paper at her. The woman was white, but had darker skin. For many Latinos, the Trump era has hammered home the privilege, or lack thereof, that comes from being the light-skinned güero or dark-skinned prieto of the family.
