Bird flu in Kerala is of H5N1 strain

Thiruvananthapuram: The strain of avian influenza that caused deaths of thousands of duck in the three districts of Kerala has been identified as H5N1, which could also spread to human beings though the infection caused by it can be cured, officials said on Thursday.

The state government stepped up precautionary and containment measures in the affected areas to check the spread of the virus.

Collective punishment is also a crime against humanity! Israel to Withdraw “Permit of Stay” from Wife of Abu Jamal, Har Nof Synagogue Assailant

How far does this go? Cousins, 1st, 2nd, 3rd? In-

laws? Friends of friends?

Israeli minister of Interior, Gilad Erdan, on Wednesday decided to strip the permit of stay in Israeli-occupied land, from Nadia Abu Jamal, the wife of Ghassan Abu Jamal, one of the two assailants who attacked a Har Nof synagogue in Jerusalem last week.

According to Israeli websites today, Erden bragged about withdrawing Abu Jamal’s permit and his collective punishments. “I’ve ordered the cancellation of Nadia Abu Jamal’s permit of stay in Israel so that anyone involved in terror needs to take into account that there may be consequences also for their families,” he said.

Yedioth Ahronoth mentioned on its website that according to this order, Nadia will be forced to leave the country and will forfeit along with her children any future monetary and social allowances from the state.

Abu Jamal originally lived in East Sawahra-West Bank before getting married to her Jerusalmite husband, Ghassan, which granted her a “family unification” that allowed her to live in Jerusalem. However, Nadia, a mother of 3, will now get expelled from the Israeli territory.

Erdogan: I am defender of women’s rights | News , Middle East | THE DAILY STAR

“It has been confirmed that he is suffering from foot in mouth syndrome”

“Nobody can slander me or my colleagues when it is obvious how I have personally defended women’s movement throughout my 40-year political career,” he said.

Erdogan, a devout Muslim, told an international conference on justice and rights for women on Monday that women should not be regarded as equal to men and claimed feminists in Turkey reject the idea of motherhood.

Erdogan also said justice rather than equality was what women needed, adding that manual labor work was against women’s “delicate nature”.

You don’t need a weather man to know which way the wind in blowing!

Several thousand protesters dispersed across the city to shut down access to the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges, the entrances to the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, and portions of the FDR and West Side Highways, venting their rage at a grand jury’s decision not to indict Missouri police officer Darren Wilson in the slaying of 18-year-old Michael Brown. “I had hope, I still had hope in our county and in our legal system,” 18-year-old Barnard student Stephanie Rothermel said as she marched down Flatbush Avenue. “But I guess that’s a stupid thing to have.”

Filipino Farmers Protest Government Research on Genetically Modified Rice | Inter Press Service

Considered by Filipinos as the eighth wonder of the world, the 2,000-year-old Ifugao Rice Terraces represent the country’s rich rice heritage, which some say will be at stake once the golden rice is approved.

The protesting farmers also delivered to the BPI, which is responsible for the development of plant industries and crop production and protection, an ‘extraordinary opposition’ petition against any extension, renewal or issuance of a new bio-safety permit for further field testing, feeding trials or commercialisation of golden rice.

Avian flu: urgent request for scientific advice – EIN News

SOSO – Same Old-Same-Old – want to blame wild birds for spread of avian influenza and not increased industrialized global poultry industry getting billions of birds ready for holiday markets in Europe and then in Jan/Feb for Chinese New year and Tet celebrations. When billions of birds are brought together, nature senses over populations and birds are stressed due to overcrowding thus viruses are re-created to balance the system and billions of birds are more vulnerable to disease. This has always been the way influenza strikes first birds, then pigs, horses and humans. But with a globalized industrial market, the disease factory is now in process year round and the chase for more profits increases chances of more deadly viruses. Duh? Wild birds do catch the influenza from produced birds which are housed in the open or from their waste that is used as fertilizer or added to fish farms to aid growing of fish food. Someday, maybe before we are all dead from a flu we cannot respond to quickly enough, some greedy poultry farmer will suggest killing all wild birds – which will do nothing but advance our own demise.

EFSA is assessing the current situation on the H5N8 avian influenza A virus in Europe and the world, following an urgent request from the European Commission. Experts are focussing on the possible entry routes of the virus into Europe- in particular on the role of wild birds.

The highly contagious avian influenza virus has recently been detected in three European countries: in a turkey holding in Germany; three chicken holdings in the Netherlands and in a duck breeding holding in the United Kingdom.

The flu viruses found in the EU are similar to one that affected poultry flocks in South Korea earlier this year. To date, there are no recorded cases of humans contracting the H5N8 virus.

EFSA’s role is to provide EU risk managers with independent scientific advice and assistance on animal health and welfare related to avian influenza and any possible food safety issues.

In previous risk assessments EFSA provided information on the risks of influenza viruses entering and spreading amongst poultry in Europe and made recommendations to prevent existing risks. EFSA experts also concluded that there is no scientific evidence that avian influenza can be transmitted to humans through consumption of food.

The scientific report will be delivered in early December 2014.

21 Photos And Videos That Tell The Story Of Los Angeles’ Ferguson Protests Last Night: LAist

After a grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri made the decision not to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the August shooting death of the unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, protests sprung up from coast to coast.

In Los Angeles, there were scattered marches that roved through Beverly Hills, the Miracle Mile, downtown and South Los Angeles until 3:30 a.m., blocking traffic and even freeways. In Los Angeles, there wasn’t the looting or fires like the epicenter of the protests in Ferguson (or like the 1992 Rodney King riots that weren’t far from anyone’s mind). However, police did fire non-lethal weapons into crowds to disperse them. NBC Los Angeles reports that altogether three protesters were arrested, though there was little information about the arrests.

One group marched onto the 110 Freeway at Pico around 11:30 p.m. That’s where protesters were met with non-lethal fire from LAPD:
