Jewish settlers have uprooted more than 5,000 olive tree saplings in agricultural lands east of the town of Turmusayya in the central West Bank north of Ramallah, locals said Thursday.
One of the owners of the lands targeted, Awad Abu Samra, told Ma’an that in the last week settlers have repeatedly raided the area to attack the olive tree saplings.

This just sucks – such terroristic children backed by childish Israeli government!
Of course this will raise the usual question of whether we cull all bats to prevent this from ever happening again. Don’t be ignorant! Bats have very important roles in pollinating and thus in keeping our ecosystem going. Should we kill all bees because they sting us? I’m pretty sure I’ve been stung by a bee more times than I’ve had Ebola/Hendra/SARS/Nipah/MERS/Lyssavirus or any other bat-hosted virus infection. Killing off everything to prevent a very rare zoonotic event when better knowledge can resolve the problem is just a typically short-sighted and knee-jerk human reaction (not a fan-can you guess?).
One question that does still remain, and one that is of extreme interest to me, is how often mild disease results from an Ebola virus infection? Good, robust serology methods to the rescue.
they are popping up more and more in civilian settings. From Pittsburgh’s G20 protests in 2009, to Zuccotti Park protests during Occupy Wall Street in 2011, to the protests over Detroit’s water shut-off earlier this year, LRAD deployment has played either a practical, innocuous role as a loudspeaker like in Zuccotti Park, or a more malevolent role, as it has in recent months.
Earlier this summer in Ferguson, MO., when a shrill, piercing siren split the tense night air, demonstrators at first didn’t know what to make of the ear-splitting ringing. “What was THAT?” a VOX headline read. But it wasn’t necessarily surprising. The use of LRADs as a dispersal technique fit neatly into place in the larger trend of an absurdly militaristic police response to protests there that, in many ways, has since shaped the larger national conversation emerging around appropriate police responses both on the sidewalk and in the street.
Nevertheless, it is alarming that the tactics and tools that carry such malicious potential as permanent hearing loss are, on the one hand, available for local police departments, but also treated lightly enough that they can be used to chase off otherwise harmless rabble-rousers blocking Midtown traffic in the middle of the night.

An arsonist set fire to a mosque in the Swedish town of Eskilstuna on Thursday, injuring five people, police said, an incident which comes amid an intense debate over immigration.
The immigration debate has pitted the far right, which wants to cut the number of asylum seekers allowed into Sweden by 90 percent, against mainstream parties intent on preserving the Nordic country’s liberal policy.
Between 15 and 20 people were in the mosque, located in the ground floor of a building in a mainly residential area, when the fire erupted. Local media footage showed smoke and flames billowing from the windows.
“A witness saw somebody throw an object through the window of the building, which serves as a mosque, after which a violent fire began,” police spokesman Lars Franzell said.

“Obviously there is a person, or a group of people behind this that were essentially terrorising me,” she said. “I don’t want to sound alarming, but certainly that’s how I felt. It’s one thing if someone comes into your house and steals a painting off your wall: that’s also a violation, but, your work, as an artist, that’s devastating.
“I’m an artistic person, I’m very expressive. I’m sorry if words alarm people, but that’s what it felt like. It was not a consensual agreement. I did not say ‘hey, here’s my music, and it’s finished.’ It was theft.”

A 16-year-old high school student has been arrested in central Turkey for “insulting” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by accusing him and his ruling party of corruption, local media reported on Thursday.
The young boy, identified by his initials MEA, was believed to be a member of a leftist organisation, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.
He was delivering a speech on Wednesday in the central Anatolian city of Konya, a bastion of Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP), in memory of a young secular teacher killed by Islamists in 1930, according to the newspaper.
The boy is now facing up to four years in prison if convicted on the charge.

More than 5,000 people queued up to feast on free chicken curry and boiled eggs at the Sector-21 market on Wednesday, after the Chandigarh Meat Market Welfare Association distributed these ‘delicacies’, to spread the word that it was safe to consume non-vegetarian dishes in this season of Christmas and New Year festivities.
By the end of the day, over 300-kg cooked chicken and 10,000 eggs had been consumed.
Atul Sonkar, president of the association, said, “The winter is peak business season for us. This unnecessary scare of bird flu has hit sales and people are scared to buy chicken and eggs. By organising this meat fair (mela), we want to send out a message that people can continue to consume these items.”

“My community needs the cops. Nobody deserves to be brutally murdered, so that hurt me,” Ms Jones continued in explaining that the real version of the chant actually meant that she believes everyone should be held accountable for their actions.
Ms Jones said that she complained to Fox after her ex-partner, a police officer himself, had alerted her to the gross misrepresentation that was being shown across the US and also worldwide.
