BBC News – Turkey rallies over murder of woman who ‘resisted rape’

Thousands of women in Turkey have protested at the murder of a young woman who allegedly resisted an attempt by a bus driver to rape her.

Police discovered the burnt body of Ozgecan Aslan, 20, in a riverbed in the city of Mersin, on Friday.

They have arrested three men in connection with her death – a minibus driver, his father and a friend.

The Turkish president and prime minister called Ms Aslan’s family to offer their condolences.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu promised the family to hunt those responsible for the crime and punish them.

Ms Aslan, a psychology student, was kidnapped on Wednesday on her way home.

The driver allegedly tried to rape her. She reportedly fought him off with pepper spray, but was then stabbed to death. She was also hit on the head with an iron pipe.

The brutality of the murder caused an outcry across Turkey.

Justice Moore in Alabama needs to follow court’s order on same-sex marriage, not publicity’s dictates: editorial | cleveland.com

Today, if America’s anti-gay bigots and diehards aren’t thanking God for Roy Moore, perhaps they should, given Moore’s attempted defiance of a federal judge’s order clearing the way for same-sex marriage in Alabama. By ordering Alabama probate judges (who, incidentally, need not be lawyers) to refuse marriage licenses to same-sex couples, Moore is demonstrating contempt for the rule of law, something he’s sworn to uphold. That is, Moore is treating as a nullity a ruling by a U.S. District judge for Southern Alabama (an appointee of George W. Bush) that cleared the way for same-sex marriage in Alabama.

Renewed fighting in Myanmar′s Shan State ′threatens nationwide peace deal′ | Asia | DW.DE | 13.02.2015

Fighting started after the MNDAA took weapons from local militia in the Kokang province on Monday, February 9. Soon afterwards, other rebel groups including the Kachin Independence Army, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, the Arakan Army and Shan State Army-North joined the fight. Since 2011, the government of Myanmar has been trying to install a nationwide ceasefire by drawing up peace agreements with numerous ethnic minority rebel groups. But the recent fighting has put a halt to further agreements.

Thousands of people in the region have fled across the border into China as a result of the violence. Officials in China reacted by urging the two sides to settle the issue peacefully so that refugees could safely return to their homes.

We messed up but Greece still has to suicide? Stubb: No more patience with Greece | Europe | DW.DE | 12.02.2015

What do you have to offer Greece? Is there room for a compromise?

The compromise is very simple. They could receive an extension of the current bailout program, which in our opinion would be in Greece’s best interests. But then they would have to push on with their structural reforms. The body monitoring these structural reforms is the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF has 70 years of experience with situations like this. I don’t think we should allow any scope for populism in Europe. We have obligations and contracts, and we must stick by them.

Parking dispute sparks 3 shooting deaths near University of North Carolina, police say

A racist psychopath – Police are trying to determine whether hate played any role in the killing of three Muslims, a crime they said was sparked by a neighbour’s long-simmering anger over parking and noise inside their condominium complex.

Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, describes himself as a “gun toting” atheist. Neighbors say he always seemed angry and frequently confronted his neighbours. His ex-wife said he was obsessed with the shooting-rampage movie “Falling Down,” and showed “no compassion at all” for other people.

His current wife, Karen Hicks, said he “champions the rights of others” and said the killings “had nothing do with religion or the victims’ faith.” Later Wednesday, she issued another statement, saying she’s divorcing him.

Britain criticised for DNA hold up keeping an innocent man locked up in Spanish prison – Crime – UK – The Independent

Speaking from prison he said: “I’ve been in prison for 11 years now for crimes I did not commit. Can you imagine how that feels? I am very angry and bitter and very frustrated. Every now and then I get fresh hope that I might be released. But I’ve learned to not get my hopes up, because I have been let down so many times. The authorities have known for eight years that Mark Dixie carried out the crimes I was jailed for but they don’t care. They’re happy for me to rot in prison even thought they know I am innocent.

“When I first heard about the DNA and Sally Anne’s murder, the first thing that struck me was she might still be alive today if the Spanish police had done their job properly.

“If they had investigated properly, interviewed the witnesses, they might have arrested Dixie back in 2003. Then he would have been in prison and could never have killed Sally Anne.

“Instead they arrested the first foreigner they could, and locked me up with no evidence. When I was first jailed I spent 14 months in solitary after being beaten up by a gang of prisoners. I lost a lot of weight and it has affected my mental and physical health.”

BBC News – ‘Wild birds may spread flu virus’

Outbreaks in poultry may become more common in the future, especially in ill-prepared countries, they warn.

A severe strain found at a duck farm in the UK last year may have been carried by wild birds out of Russia, according to Dutch researchers.

The virus is a low human health risk, but wild birds on long migratory routes should be monitored, they say.

H5N8 is a strain of bird flu that appeared late last year in Russia, East Asia, North America and four European countries, including the UK.

Believing that life is fair makes you a terrible person | Oliver Burkeman | Comment is free | The Guardian

“this is the key – not being able to deal with truth that crazy things can happen at random!” Yet, ironically, this desire to believe that things happen for a reason leads to the kinds of positions that help entrench injustice instead of reducing it.
