Abdul Kareem, originally from Diyala, explained the situation: “Tuz Khurmatu is divided in two: al-Jumhuriyah is run by the Kurdish police, and there are no problems; but Hay al-Askary is controlled by Shia militia. Sunnis will find problems there.”

“I cannot understand exactly what’s going on, but people disappear,” he said. “Some days four people, some days six.”

Mohammed Hassan was attending the distribution with four of his brothers. He lowered his voice: “When ISIS came, the city was antagonised and Sunnis started to be targeted.” To protect themselves, they “only move when it’s necessary.”

A large gathering of Sunni Arab IDPs might attract the wrong sort of attention. There were shouts as people tried to leave the distribution fast, piling the blankets and boxes into shared pick-ups.

Many of the displaced back in Sankur are too scared to even enter Tuz Khurmatu to sign up for a government cash grant. Sa’ad pointed out that they “cannot go into Tuz to register because of the killing.”

When We Protested and The Lebanese Government Tried To Kill Us

The day after, I’m the most proud I’ve been in years. I’m proud of every single man, woman and child that went down yesterday to protest. I genuinely love every single one of those 10,000 people that gathered around in Beirut yesterday, even the smokers.I’m proud of the people of Tripoli who went down to Beirut late at night to protest even when no one protested for them when their city was being burned again and again. I’m proud they were not deterred at the Madfoun checkpoint which was blocked by the army at 1:40AM to stop them. You people turned Beirut into a city that’s worth being plastered across the world yesterday because you were amazing, courageous and wonderful. You got people all across the country to see the government for what it truly was: a rotten establishment that reeks of decay. The day after, you are all heroes, with your cuts and scars and bruises and teary eyes. The government fears you. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have reacted this way. In a few years, when you have children in a country that’s hopefully become civilized enough for us to bring children into, you will sit down and tell them how you changed things. It’s a beautiful story to tell, believe me.

VDU’s blog: Whether MERS-CoV spreads or stops is entirely up to the hospitals…

We propagate epidemics. We create our own headaches in this arena. Many viruses wouldn’t break out if we didn’t create the circumstances for an outbreak. The biggest headache? Infected patients who spread virus to uninfected patients and health workers when they are in unprotected close contact in a healthcare setting.

“I saw the text messages from other women before we got…

“I saw the text messages from other women before we got married. My parents warned me but I married him anyway, without their permission. I thought he’d change. Now he leaves for days at a time. He tells me: ‘Calm down. It’s nothing. They come and go. But I live with you.’ But I can’t calm down. I think about it all the time. Whenever he’s out, I think about it. I try to keep busy and calm my mind but it’s gotten so bad that I’m seeing a doctor.”

Prosecution requests nine-year jail term for Khadija Ismayilova

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemns the monstrous sentence sought by the prosecution in journalist Khadija Ismayilova preposterous trial’s in Azerbaijan, a nation that suffered one of the biggest falls of any country in RSF’s 2015 press freedom.

The judicial sham will soon be over. After a series of hearings in which the defendant’s rights were systematically flouted, a Baku prosecutor today requested a nine year sentence for Ismayilova.

“This is so obviously an absurd and outrageous political trial, a judicial sham that elevates this case into a symbol of the wave of persecution of independent media that began a year ago,” RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said.

“We urge the international community to condemn this trial and to remind Azerbaijan of its obligations under the many international commitments it has given. Pressure must be put on this regime in order to obtain the unconditional release of Ismayilova and all the other journalists arbitrarily detained in Azerbaijan.”Held partially behind closed doors, the trial has been conducted in a blatantly hostile manner with the clear aim of denying justice. In order to dispatch the case as quickly as possible, the judges accepted almost none of the defence lawyers’ requests, thereby preventing them from presenting evidence that would have demonstrated the absurdity of the charges.

The access of Ismayilova’s family and friends to the courtroom has been restricted on the grounds that there has been no space. According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the courtroom was filled with people recruited for the occasion. The independent press has also been denied access.

Azerbaijan’s leading investigative journalist, Ismayilova is well known for her coverage of high-level government corruption, much of it involving members of the ruling Aliyev family.

After several attempts to pressure and intimidate her, including a blackmail attempt with a sex tape, the authorities finally arrested her on 5 December 2014 on the trumped-up charge of inciting a fellow journalist to attempt suicide.

After he retracted his statement incriminating Ismayilova, the authorities brought four new charges against her – large-scale embezzlement, illegal trading, tax evasion and abuse of authority in connection with the Baku bureau of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which Ismayilova once headed.

Azerbaijan is ranked 162nd out of 180 countries in the <a href=”http://index.rsf.org/

Slovakia ′will only accept Christian refugees′ | News | DW.COM | 20.08.2015

“Score another point for fundamentalist idiots who claim to be Christian and Muslim!” The Slovakian government, which will accept 200 people from camps in Turkey, Italy and Greece under the EU plan, denied that its decision to exclusively accept Christian refugees was discriminatory as it was intended to ensure community cohesion.

Slovakia’s Interior Ministry spokesman Ivan Metik told the BBC: “We could take 800 Muslims but we don’t have any mosques in Slovakia so how can Muslims be integrated if they are not going to like it here?

“We want to really help Europe with this migration wave but…we are only a transit country and the people don’t want to stay in Slovakia.”

Norbert Röttgen, chairman of the German Bundestag’s foreign affairs committee, sharply criticized Slovakia for rejecting Muslim refugees.

He told radio station Deutschlandfunk that Slovakia’s behavior is contributing to the failure of Europe, and that the country’s egotism would torpedo the EU’s ability to act.
