Liam Brierley added: “We’re pleased to have collated ecology, epidemiology and public health information to identify the factors that drive virus sharing and we hope it is used to improve surveillance of emerging diseases and inform decisions about preventative action. There’s still some way to go in monitoring virus diversity in wild animals and specific information on infections that would allow us to create higher-resolution maps. With advances in technology, we anticipate the way we collect and share data to improve, potentially stopping future pandemics.”
On October 7, after less than a day of deliberations, the jury found DuPont liable for Bartlett’s cancer, agreeing with the defendant that the company had for years negligently contaminated her drinking water supply in Tuppers Plain, Ohio with a toxic chemical formerly used to make its signature brand of nonstick coating: Teflon.
Canadian weather authorities blamed the temperature spike on the freak depression which has already brought record Christmas temperatures to North America and lashed Britain with winds and floods.The deep low pressure area is currently looming over Iceland and churning up hurricane-force 75-knot winds and nine-metre waves in the north Atlantic while dragging warm air northwards.”It’s a very violent and extremely powerful depression, so it’s not surprising that hot temperatures have been pushed so far north,” Canadian Government meteorologist Nathalie Hasell said.”This deep depression has pushed hot air as far as the North Pole, where temperatures are at least 20 degrees above normal, at around freezing point, between zero and 2 degrees Celsius,” she said.US scientists from the North Pole Environmental Observatory told AFP news agency that the temperatures had climbed suddenly.An Arctic monitoring point 300 kilometres from the Pole that had been recording -37C on Monday had shot up to -8C by Wednesday, senior researcher James Morison said.The polar region is the area of the world that has seen the most profound effects of climate change in recent decades.Average year-round temperatures in the Arctic are 3C higher than they were in the pre-industrial era, snowfall is heavier, winds are stronger and the ice sheet has been shrinking for 30 years.Ms Hasell said that Canada had not kept complete records of North Pole weather but that it was nonetheless “bizarre” to see such high temperatures on the ice pack in the middle of its long night.After tormenting the North Atlantic, the depression is expected to head towards Russia’s Siberia, where the inhabitants can expect a heatwave of sorts.
The Yurok People have the responsibility to care for our natural world, including the plants and animals we use for our foods and medicines. This Ordinance is a necessary step to protect our food sovereignty and to ensure the spiritual, cultural and physical health of the Yurok People. GMO food production systems, which are inherently dependent on the overuse of herbicides, pesticides and antibiotics, are not our best interest,’ said James Dunlap, Chairman of the Yurok Tribe.The Ordinance allows for enforcement of violations through the Yurok Tribal Court. Yurok Chief Judge Abby Abinanti stated, ‘It is the inherent sovereign right of the Yurok People to grow plants from natural traditional seeds and to sustainably harvest plants, salmon and other fish, animals, and other life-giving foods and medicines, in order to sustain our families and communities as we have successfully done since time immemorial; our Court will enforce any violations of these inherent, and now codified, rights.’The Yurok Tribe is working with other Tribes in a regional collaborative as part of the Northern California Tribal Court Coalition (NCTCC), and the Tribe and NCTCC are co-hosting an Indigenous Food Sovereignty Summit in Klamath in the spring of 2016.A signed copy of the ordinance can be found on NCTCC’s website:nctcc.org.
Like with Dengue and Chikununguya which arrived before it, Zika is finding the climate and abundance of Aedes mosquitoes highly conducive to spreading, along with a large, virologically naive population. As a result, Brazil alone is estimating more than a half million infections over the past eight months (see Brazil Estimates 500K+ Zika Infections). Up until a few months ago Zika was considered a relatively minor threat, particularly when compared to the far more painful and debilitating Chikungunya and the four (occasionally) deadly strains of Dengue. Zika infections were generally regarded as relatively mild, and self limiting. That perception began to change, ever so slightly, after an outbreak in French Polynesia in 2013-2014, which saw a concurrent spike in Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) (see Zika, Dengue & Unusual Rates Of Guillain Barre Syndrome In French Polynesia).
{The complete connection of how bats become more vulnerable or the virus stronger is not addressed. Over-population stress of bats from human destruction of its forest ecology may be a significant factor, as well as cyclical large increases in food supply which can trigger increases in bat population. The change in food supply can also be the result of human intervention – creation of single fruit crop plantations- nh}
The Ebola virus and fruit bats have been waging a molecular battle for survival that may have started at least 25 million years ago.
Australia’s federal government has formally approved a plan to construct the world’s largest coal terminal at Abbot Point in northern Queensland, just 19 kilometers (12 miles) from the Great Barrier Reef.Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the project could go ahead, but only under conditions aimed at protecting the reef marine park from the 1.1 million cubic meters of sludge that would have to be dredged to create the port.All sludge dug up during dredging would have to be disposed of on land rather than at sea, as was originally planned.Initial plans called for three million cubic meters of material to be dredged and dumped into waters around the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. However, this was later abandoned after protests.The Great Barrier Reef is just 19 kilometers out to sea, and coal transport ships will have to navigate a passage through.
While definitive proof is still lacking, the operating assumption is these profound birth defects are likely due to maternal infection with the Zika Virus during the first or second trimester (see ECDC: Complications Potentially Linked To The Zika Virus Outbreaks In Brazil & French Polynesia).Over the past month more than 2000 excess microcephalic births have been registered in Brazil, and those numbers are expected to rise significantly over the months ahead. Meanwhile, countries just now seeing the arrival of the virus are girding themselves to deal with similar public health challenges. Much of Central & South America, along with the Caribbean are at risk. Included also are parts of North America where the two primary Aedes mosquito vectors can be found.
