Statement from President Joe Biden on Historic Investment to Ensure Future of Auto Industry is Made in America | The White House

Building a clean energy economy can and should be a win-win for union autoworkers and automakers. This investment will create thousands of good-paying, union manufacturing jobs and retain even more—from Lansing, Michigan to Fort Valley, Georgia – by helping auto companies retool, reboot, and rehire in the same factories and communities. This delivers on my commitment to never give up on the manufacturing communities and workers that were left behind by my predecessor and are now making a comeback with the support of my policies, including the conversion grants my administration is announcing today. These grants will help ensure the future of the auto industry is made in America by American union workers. I’ll never stop fighting for the American auto industry and American autoworkers.

Our Reality TV Back in the Day! 📺 | From Behind the Pen

My husband and I were having a comical conversation the other day as we began to reminisce about overhearing our mothers talk emotionally about people we didn’t know existed. They would be debating about the crazy mistake someone made, or the affair someone was having, someone falling in love with a gold-digger, who died, whose body was not yet recovered from falling overboard from a boat 5 years ago, or the baby someone was carrying that did not belong to their husband. What?

But that was until we discovered that their passionate conversations with a neighbor down the street or a sister over the phone were about fictional characters that became larger than life in their daily world between cleaning, shopping, and preparing dinner when we got home from school. They were obsessed with soap operas. This was their reality TV back in the day and the conversations that lit up the Bell Telephone lines during the weekdays were fusses over scenes from the day’s show and the cliffhangers on Fridays for the following week’s shows. Thank God for the weekend breaks when we could watch Saturday morning cartoons! 😱

Remember Mike and Nancy Karr? Alan Spalding? Holly and Roger Thorpe? Luke and Laura Spencer? Erica Kane? Victor Newman? Katherine Chancellor? Have you ever heard of The Edge of Night, The Guiding Light, General Hospital, All My Children, As the World Turns, The Secret Storm, and Dark Shadows? Well if you do, you were at some point a groupie of soap operas or you knew of someone who was (mother, aunt, grandmother, neighbor, or all of the above).

In the early 1980s, there were more than a dozen soap operas, or soaps as they were called, which aired on ABC, NBC, and CBS networks. Somehow, we managed to nab our favorite shows and a cast of characters we loved or hated. So for those of you not familiar with what a soap opera is,

The term “soap opera” originated from radio dramas originally being sponsored by soap manufacturers. A soap opera, daytime drama, or soap for short, is typically a long-running radio or television serial, frequently characterized by melodrama, ensemble casts, and sentimentality. (Wikipedia)

But then there were the primetime soap operas like Peyton Place, Knots Landing, Melrose Place, Dallas, Dynasty, and Falcon Crest. Oh honey, talk about some serious fashion statements and drama galore! Yep, I fell for the nighttime drama trap! It’s eerie how I became my mother after hours!

Many of the actors and actresses who began on soap operas amassed different career rewards that catapulted them to great success. I guess you could say these were our social media influencers back in the day, before influencing became as popular as it is now. Today, there are only three soaps that are still airing on broadcast television: General Hospital (celebrating 60 years on ABC), The Bold and the Beautiful, and The Young and the Restless (CBS).

So, entertainment television back then was our reality bottled in a fictional world. Yet, our obsession with these people, places, and their lifestyles gave us something and someplace to escape to each week, and told stories that showed us comical villains and a moral to the storyline for these weekly productions.
