Women at Forefront Of Egypt’s Revolutionary Wave

Nervana

This piece initially published in  Al-Monitor

On June 30, the thunderous chanting of Egyptian women protesting against Mohammed Morsi, demanding that he leave office, echoed through the streets. Their voices were louder than their fellow men, adopting a collective firm, assertive tone that asserted their determination. Some female protesters carried very telling signs, expressing phrases such as “We are the coup,” their way of emphasizing their frustration with what many of them perceive as Morsi’s regressive policies.

In March 2013, despite the mounting opposition, the Muslim Brotherhood decided to shun half the society by releasing a strong statement condemning a United Nations declaration draft calling for an end to all forms of violence against women, claiming that it would lead to the “complete disintegration of society.” Such overtly regressive views have reaffirmed what many Egyptian women feared: The Muslim Brotherhood’s modern, progressive image is as hollow as its…

Upcoming talk: Uncloaking the Haze

Cannot be happening to the Singapore I remember so well. What a shame and think what it is doing to the land in Indonesia – killing it.

The haze is the most vivid and longest-running environmental disaster facing Singapore.

We warmly invite all who are concerned about the haze and want to do something about it to join us! We will present 3 different perspectives on what causes the haze and discuss what we can do to stop it!

Boil berries? Hepatitis A outbreak spreads to Ireland; tracking global trail of frozen berries | barfblog

Water contaminated with human sewage, or night soil as the source in all these outbreaks?

Likely suspect and hard to fix other than to not accept berries in global trade that have not passed muster for water safety.

Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and the Phenomenon of Re-Experience

Prenatal and perinatal psychology is the field that deals with the effects of events occurring prior to (prenatal) and surrounding (perinatal) the time of birth upon later life and personality. An ever increasing amount though certainly not all of the information we have about these periods of our lives and their effects is derived through the later and vivid remembering of these events in a phenomenon known as re-experience. Correspondingly, the two most frequently asked questions about this relatively new field, put by those initially encountering it, are those concerning the specific meanings of the terms perinatal and re-experience.

At the outset, I wish to present an explanation…

News from The Associated Press – “spin” to make Zimmerman look good

Seminole County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said in a statement Monday that deputies responding to the wreck found Zimmerman and another man had already helped the couple and their two children out of the flipped SUV.

The sheriff’s office report says Zimmerman spoke with a deputy at the scene and then left. Zimmerman did not see the crash happen.

My bet – he was listening to a scanner or they called him to get over there – to look good and make sheriff who did arrest him earlier look better too!

NYPD Nails Cyclist For Biking Through Yellow Light, Not “Shutting Up”: Gothamist

The latest example of the NYPD’s unbridled fetishization of cyclists is a two-for-one special: not only is it a crystal-clear example of the NYPD’s disproportional, no-common-sense enforcement of traffic laws, but it also carries a whiff of classic cop misogyny. Hilda Cohen, an advocate for safer streets and a seemingly punctilious adherent to cyclist street etiquette, was stopped by the NYPD on Friday evening for biking through a yellow light. Here is her infuriating story:
