Ukrainian Museum Director Destroys Critical Painting Ahead Of President’s Visit

Ukrainian Museum Director Destroys Critical Painting Ahead Of President’s Visit.

Natalia Zabolotna’s primary job as director of the Mystetskyi Arsenal art museum in Kyiv was to oversee the pieces under her roof.

But on July 25, the night before a visit by President Viktor Yanukovych and the opening of an exhibit meant to celebrate Ukrainian heritage, she took a can of black paint and doused a piece that she deemed “immoral.”

A day later, the destruction of artist Volodymyr Kuznetsov’s “Koliivschina: Judgment Day” has prompted the resignation of the museum’s deputy, helped fuel a street protest, and triggered alarm within the country’s artistic community.

Bihar midday meal tragedy: HRD ministry blames school headmistress – The Times of India

(A tragic error and false pride in leadership has killed 23 – all pointing fingers should be for whole community for not supporting better care and management of the school.)

The report says the food stored at the headmistress’ house was issued by her daily. And even on the fateful day after the food was cooked and inconsistencies of smell and colour brought to the headmistress’ notice she chided the cook by saying that the oil has been procured from her own house and there was nothing wrong with it. In fact, the oil was bought from her husband’s shop. “She further ordered the cook to go ahead with the cooking, who complied with the order,” the report said.

Well-Loved Neighbor Killed In Broad Daylight In East Oakland; City Leaders React: SFist

A 66-year-old woman known well to her neighbors as someone who would gladly watch over your pets if you were out of town was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon while driving her car near her home. The shooting happened on Fern Street near Brookdale Avenue in Oakland, along what’s described as a “shady” stretch of street bordering the Home of Peace Cemetery, between the Maxwell Park and Fairfax neighborhoods.

Judy Salamon was found dead in her car, in the middle of the street, just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, and neighbors believe someone may have stepped out in front of her car in order to rob her.

Where ‘Nightmare Bacteria’ Came From, And How Our Inattention Helped Them Emerge – Wired Science

Because they are effectively untreatable, CREs are very serious — as many as half of the patients who contract these infections die from them — and they are surprisingly common. In the United States, they have been found in 42 states to this point, in more than 4 percent of all hospitals, and more than 18 percent of “long term acute care” institutions, which offer critical care such as ventilator support for patients who need that level of care for months.

Pussy Riot band member remains defiant in face of parole denial | News | DW.DE | 26.07.2013

A jailed member of the punk band Pussy Riot lost her parole bid in a Russian court over her involvement in the August 2012 protest song her band sang in Moscow’s main Orthodox cathedral. She remained defiant in court.

The ruling from the Supreme Court of the Mordovia region denied Nadezhda Tolokonnikova parole on Friday, instead upholding an earlier decision not to release her after nearly a year behind bars.

Tolokonnikova had hoped she could return home to care for her five-year-old daughter. Yet she appeared before the court in an unrepentant fashion, stating that prison would not correct her behavior.

“The time I served in prison has done nothing for my correction, therefore I see no sense in keeping me behind bars,” she told the court.

No ‘guilt’

She also refused to plead guilty, which might have won her favor in the court.

“I do not admit guilt and will not plead guilty. I have principles upon which I will stand,” she said from the cage, often used for defendants or convicts in Russian courts.

Is Egypt Witnessing A Media Coup?

Don’t agree that there is a media “coup” of any sort but the international news is more than a bit simplistic and does take to framing the news according to the views of the leaders of their nations or owners. That happens worldwide and is one of the reasons that sources like Egyptian Streets help to balance the news.

Egyptian Streets

By Sara Farouk Ahmed, a resident in Cairo. Please note, opinions expressed in this article are those of Sara and do not necessarily represent Egyptian Streets’ editorial policy.

‘News’, especially foreign ‘news’, has been devalued to the point where you choose to watch, listen or read opinions that you agree with – where reports contain edited calls and tweets, and polls, that back up their/your take on what is happening in the world, are conducted. Egypt has been subject to this kind of biased speculation, agenda driven and blind reporting rather than any form of reputable investigative journalism.

The foreign media did a spectacular job in January 2011. By focusing on Tahrir Square, they persuaded the world that the whole of Egypt was in turmoil thus all but destroying the tourist industry and any form of investment. Luxor [and, by default, Qena, Naga Hamadi, Dendera, Kom Ombo, Esna and…

Private Drones Spying on Surfers! OMG! Aerial Footage Lets Us Watch Santa Cruz Surfers From A Gulls-Eye View: SFist

While it is far from the first example of aerial drones being used to capture high-flying footage of Bay Area locations, this is the first time we’re taking to the skies to observe the lineup at a local surf spot.

Shot by photographer Eric Cheng using a remote controlled quadcopter and a GoPro camera over Steamer Lane down in Santa Cruz, the results are, in a word, rad:
