Can\’t snark this: Wuhan couple married for 75 years pass away within 15 hours of each other

With some of the stories coming out of China about love and marriage these days, it’s easy to become cynical about this topic. You may now take the next 5 minutes to be a softie. A Wuhan couple in their 90s and who have been married for 75 years passed away within 15 hours of each other at the end of October, Wuhan Evening News reports.

The man, 92 and his wife, 93, left six children — the oldest being 75 — and 15 grandchildren behind. The two, who met in an arranged marriage, were described to have had a respectful and happy marriage. In what is an epic case of over-achievement, not only did the two manage to bring up their children through the most tumultuous years in recent Chinese history, send them to school and survive the decades immediately post-1949, they also managed to bring up 12 of their 15 grand kids.

Lebanon Won’t Have Internet Tomorrow?

Sigh

A Separate State of Mind | A Blog by Elie Fares

Isn’t this the best news to wake up to?

According to Al Akhbar, Lebanon has failed to pay its dues to the IMEWE internet cable consortium and will be cut off from the country’s main internet supply tomorrow, effectively slashing 60% of our internet capacity. We owe the consortium around $1.9 million. If that amount is not paid by November 3rd, tomorrow, Lebanon will also lose its share of the IMEWE cable which is worth around $60 million.

Given our internet state, slashing 60% off of it means we are rendered with a connection that is barely usable and certainly not enough to sustain the country. Lebanon also has a redundant system which covers 30% of current capacity. Back in July 2012, Lebanon had an outage in the IMEWE cable which was due to technical reasons. We fell back on that failover system and the only functional internet we…

New conflict on RU-486 abortions : SCOTUSblog

The attacks on women just do not stop – women and men need to stick together with protecting their rights!

Under a method approved thirteen years ago by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a woman seeking an abortion involving RU-486 and another drug must see a doctor three times to complete the process of ending her pregnancy, must take larger doses of the drugs that make the cost higher, and may only follow this procedure in the first seven weeks of pregnancy after her last menstrual period.

Since the FDA decision, however, doctors have developed a new technique that uses one-third as much of the drugs, the second round of which the woman may take in her home rather than at a medical facility, and the method can be used up through the ninth week of pregnancy.   It is less expensive because of the lower dosages.  This is considered an “off-label” method because the FDA has not approved it formally, although it is common for the FDA not to block off-label uses of many drugs it has approved for use.   More than ninety percent of medical abortions are now done, across the country, by this newer approach.
