Israeli “training exercises” condemned – internally and external human rights groups

Ahmad Amro and his friends were breaking the fast one evening during Ramadan when a group of soldiers approached the Hebron community center they were sitting outside.

\”Around 12 of them appeared from three different directions,\” he said. \”Then more of them came and shut all the doors, started jumping all over the place, running from one room to another, going upstairs, acting as if one of them had been injured and carrying him off on a stretcher … We didn\’t know what was going on, or why they were doing it.\”

Ahmad later discovered the soldiers were training, rather than carrying out a real raid, and later returned to their base without making any arrests. Nobody came to apologize or explain what had happened afterwards.

The incident was one of more than 40 that have been documented by different human rights groups in Israel, which are working together to challenge the practice, which they say is inhumane and in breach of the Israeli Defense Forces\’ (IDF) duty to protect the local population. One of them, Yesh Din, has asked the Supreme Court to rule on the legality of this type of training.

The Muslim Brotherhood, a terrorist organisation?

Nervana

This piece initially published in The Globe and Mail

The designation of the Muslim Brotherhood group as a terrorist organization is the most recent example of a growing political agitation in Egypt, a new climax of an ongoing crisis that has shattered Egyptian society and its political establishment.

For months, since the ousting of president Morsi, there has been an open confrontation between the Brotherhood and the military-backed interim leadership. Both claim legitimacy; the Brotherhood claims electoral legitimacy and the interim leadership claims popular legitimacy after the June 30th uprising against Morsi. The outlawing of the Brotherhood is a bold move, albeit a risky one, by the interim government to assert its authority as the representative of the State and people of Egypt against a defiant group that still thinks it has the means and ability to challenge the State.

The attack on security headquarter in the Egyptian city…

Greenovate Boston » Higher Ground Rooftop Farm’s John Stoddard and Courtney Hennessey

What is a green roof? “A waste-eliminating, resource-protecting, CO2-reducing, powerhouse of a concept that also produces delicious organically grown food!” explains John Stoddard, founding farmer of Higher Ground farm, Boston’s first rooftop farm, located atop the Boston Design Center in the Seaport district. By using a system of layers laid over an existing roof, green roofs benefit the building owner and their community by reducing energy usage (by insulating the property in the winter and cooling it in the summer), reducing waste by protecting and prolonging the roof’s life, and–in Higher Ground’s case–feeding the community!  This isn’t to even mention how green roofs help manage stormwater overflow and heat island effects caused by the city’s changing climate.

The NSA Uses Powerful Toolbox in Effort to Spy on Global Networks – SPIEGEL ONLINE

The Way of Tao takes on whole new meaning!

These documents reveal that in 2008, the Texas Cryptologic Center employed fewer than 60 TAO specialists. By 2015, the number is projected to grow to 270 employees. In addition, there are another 85 specialists in the \”Requirements & Targeting\” division (up from 13 specialists in 2008). The number of software developers is expected to increase from the 2008 level of three to 38 in 2015. The San Antonio office handles attacks against targets in the Middle East, Cuba, Venezuela and Colombia, not to mention Mexico, just 200 kilometers (124 miles) away, where the government has fallen into the NSA\’s crosshairs.

The thing to remember is that no one is actually “listening” to your conversations or “reading” your e-mail or tracking your web searches – unless you are up to no good or are in conversation with someone like that. Big cyberdata analogues scoop up billions of activities and sorts them – if it finds you fall into a pattern they are searching for and you are in a network being actively watched – then an individual may start tracking your data – specifically. Otherwise nothing is going on that is not done by Yahoo,Google and Verizon on a daily basis of monitoring lines, customer “wants” and interests to sell us stuff.

David Cameron confronted by angry residents of flooded village | UK news | The Guardian

Sally Pawson, a nurse who lives alone, had enlisted the help of friends to rip out carpets, lift soaked chipboard floors and clean up her filthy possessions.

\”My frustration is that until Cameron came we had been left abandoned,\” she said. \”When we knew he was coming this morning the police showed up, the council turned up but until then the only people helping us were volunteers. It was just a publicity stunt.\”

Cameron pledged to make flood protection an increasing priority of the government and commiserated with villagers that the floods were \”completely awful\”.
