old, weathered sun has kissed my face

youthful  color there is no trace

wind scorched have I been left to dry

you never stopped to say “goodbye”

*

the life we shared was fair and good

the test of time is where we stood

what came between love you and I?

you never stopped to say “goodbye”

*

some things do come and others go

life springs forth death’s a solemn blow

things fade away, I don’t know why

you never stopped to say “goodbye”

*

the hinges barely hold me now

I soon shall take my final bow

I say these things with fateful sigh

you never stopped to say “goodbye”

Shipment of whale meat from Iceland arrives in Japan | Greenpeace International

(Why? So lame and unneeded, cruel, wasteful.)

Its arrival here has almost doubled the stockpile of unsold whale meat sitting in freezers around Japan.

Iceland hunts these whales only for export to Japan. No one in Iceland eats them. But fewer and fewer people in Japan eat whale either. A poll by the respected Asahi newspaper last month found that just 4 percent of respondents occasionally eat whale meat, while 10 percent said they eat whale meat on rare occasions. Forty-eight percent said they have had whale meat once in the distant past, but they have not had it recently. Thirty-seven percent, including roughly half of respondents in their 20s and 30s, said they do not eat whale meat at all.

Muslim world scholars condemn Nigeria kidnapping | News , International | THE DAILY STAR

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia: Top religious scholars working under the world’s largest bloc of Islamic countries say they strongly condemn the kidnapping of more than 270 Nigerian schoolgirls, and are calling for their immediate release.

The kidnappings three weeks ago by the extremist group Boko Haram have led to worldwide condemnation. The group’s leader has used Islamic teachings as justification for threatening to sell the girls into slavery.

The Islamic Fiqh Academy, which is based in Saudi Arabia and dedicated to the advanced study of Islam, said Thursday that this “crime and other crimes committed by the likes of these extremist organizations contradicts all humanitarian principles and moral values and violates the provisions of the Quran and Sunnah,” or teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.

No tattoos please, we’re Buddhists — New Internationalist

(The Bodu Bala Sena would make the Buddha cry for their extreme inhumane actions in the name of religion – especially since they are about ultra-nationalism and not about spiritual matters.)

Members of an extremist Buddhist nationalist group called the Bodu Bala Sena (‘Buddhist army’, BBS) publicly abused and intimidated a monk whom they accused of being pro-Muslim, disrupting a press conference held by him at a hotel. The police did not intervene to restore order. The organization’s saffron-robed members also stormed a government ministry building, alleging that the monk was hiding there. The insulting language and gestures used by the BBS – directed mostly at Muslim and Christian minorities – have been recorded on camera and broadcast on public television. Yet it would appear that none of this qualifies as ‘deliberately and maliciously outraging religious feelings’ of others.

The Gun Report: May 7, 2014 – NYTimes.com

Last Saturday, 26-year-old Stephen Guillermo had just returned from a night of drinking when he tried to enter the fifth-floor apartment he shared with his mother and two younger siblings in the South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco. But he mistakenly got off on the third floor, and the apartment he thought was his belonged to Amisi Sudi Kachepa, a 68-year-old retired security guard, who shot Guillermo to death.

It doesn’t appear that Guillermo was able to gain entry into Kachepa’s apartment; he was reportedly shot while still in the hall. Kachepa was arrested on Saturday but released yesterday without charge, angering the victim’s family. Yesterday at a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, family members called on prosecutors to file charges against Kachepha.

“His fatal mistake was getting off on the wrong floor,” Emil Guillermo, the victim’s cousin, told the Board of Supervisors. Outside the meeting, he told reporters, “We shouldn’t make it easy for people to use guns without consequences.”

The victim’s family had lived in the apartment for 18 years. Stephen, the family’s breadwinner, was set to graduate from San Francisco State University with a degree in international relations in June.

IWS Documented News DAILY POSTINGS: [IWS] Catalyst: INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP: THE VIEW FROM SIX COUNTRIES [7 May 2014]

It showed that employees—both women and men—who felt included were more likely to report going above and beyond the call of duty and suggest new product ideas and ways of getting work done. The report also identified four leadership behaviors that predicted whether or not employees felt included.

·         In all six countries studied, the more included employees felt, the more likely they were to propose new ideas and be more supportive of one another (something researchers call team citizenship).

o    In China, employee perceptions of inclusion accounted for 78% of innovation and 71% of team citizenship.

o    In Mexico, they accounted for 51% of innovation and 60% of team citizenship.

o    In India, they accounted for 62% of innovation and 43% of team citizenship.

o    In Australia, Germany and the United States, they accounted for 19% to 22% of innovation, and 29% to 41% of team citizenship.

Reaching the Most Vulnerable Survivors of Afghanistan’s Deadly Landslide

Zulfia leads one of those families. She is living now with her five children under a tent distributed by Concern, all of them dressed in the same clothes they were wearing on the day she lost her husband in the landslides. She also lost all her household items and animals.

Jamila, 13, is another. She lost her father a few years ago, and her mother in the landslides. She managed to rescue her four sisters and two brothers. “I am the eldest one in my family now,” she says. “What should I do with my brothers and sisters? How should I look after them?”
