Palestinian intellectuals demand ‘unity’ in actions, not words

Resistance might mean different things to different people. But Resistance, in its many forms, is taking place all over Palestine.

Over recent years, two television programs have dominated Palestinian TV during Ramadan. The Syrian drama series ‘Bab al-Hara’ (‘Gate of the Neighbourhood’) takes centre stage in households across the country after the iftar meal, with its tales of Syrian life under French imperial rule.

nedhamson’s Comment on H.R. 5058: To amend the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros … – POPVOX.com

OpposeH.R. 5058: To amend the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act to provide for State and tribal management and protection of wild free-roaming horses and burros, and for other purposes.

Dear Rep. Brad Wenstrup:

I oppose The Wild Horse Oversight Act because… it would allow some states to cull herds and sell to slaughter houses to ship burro and horse meat to China and elsewhere. Both animals were introduced here from elsewhere but are now part and parcel of our nation culture – not to be treated as state by state issue.

Text of H.R. 5058: Wild Horse Oversight Act (Introduced version) – GovTrack.us

Text of H.R. 5058: Wild Horse Oversight Act (Introduced version) – GovTrack.us

Except as provided by subsection (b), at the request of the legislature or Governor of a State or the governing body of a federally recognized Indian tribe, the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture shall allow the State or federally recognized Indian tribe to assume all management and protection functions under this Act regarding wild free-roaming horses and burros on land within the boundaries of the State or federally recognized Indian tribe. After a State or federally recognized Indian tribe assumes such functions, wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be managed by the State or federally recognized Indian tribe in accordance with this Act and in the same manner as any other non-federally regulated species regarding functions not specified in this Act.

Will this endanger wild horses and burros if states and reservations take over management and protection? My assumption is that it would – bot horse folks will know better.

Introduced by three Republicans

UKIP in freefall as Labour takes council seat from Farage

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UKIP!)

A council seat on Redditch Borough Council – which UKIP won by a landslide only in May – has fallen in a by-election to Labour:

redditch 1

Compare this with the results from the same ward just over 2 months ago*:

redditch 2

That’s a swing of +11.7% to Labour and -10.5% from UKIP.

Looks like UKIP support is in freefall.

And – contrary to popular belief – it’s Labour not the Tories who are picking up the voters.

.

*The reason for the by-election was the resignation of the newly-elected UKIP councillor Dave Small after he made racist and homophobic remarks on Facebook. Proof that being openly intolerant and prejudiced is not the vote-winner most of the right-wing press seem to think it is?

Please feel free to comment.

MH17: rebels block access to part of site of crash as evidence against them grows | World | The Guardian

All sides have called for a thorough and impartial investigation into what caused the crash, which killed all 283 passengers and 15 crew on board MH17, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. However, the first group of international investigators on the scene were involved in a tense standoff with the armed separatists who control the crash site at Grabovo.

A unit of heavily armed rebels blocked the 30-strong team from the OSCE, cordoning off a large part of the crash site. The inspectors retreated after an hour-long standoff, having been unable to gain access. They were sent on their way by warning shots fired by the rebel unit commander.

“We will keep coming back tomorrow and the next day and the next day,” said spokesman Michael Bociurkiw. “Tomorrow will be a crunch day. There are a lot of experts from the Netherlands and Malaysia gathering in Kiev as well as relatives. The bodies are starting to bloat and decay. An expert team is clearly needed. There is a lot to be done in a short amount of time.”

In Washington, Obama called for a full, impartial investigation and said the tragedy should cause people to “snap their heads together” and stop playing games in Ukraine. In veiled criticism of the lack of European support for US-led economic sanctions against Russia, Obama said the loss of so many European lives should serve as a “wake-up call” for Europe.
