Avian Flu Diary: WHO: Cuba To Lend 165 HCWs To The Ebola Fight

WHO welcomes Cuban doctors for Ebola response in west Africa

Statement

12 September 2014

WHO welcomes the commitment from the Government of Cuba to provide 165 health professionals to support Ebola care in west Africa. The newly announced support includes physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, specialists in infection control, intensive care specialists and social mobilization officers, and will be concentrated in Sierra Leone.

“If we are going to go to war with Ebola, we need the resources to fight,” says Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization. “I am extremely grateful for the generosity of the Cuban government and these health professionals for doing their part to help us contain the worst Ebola outbreak ever known. This will make a significant difference in Sierra Leone.”

“Cuba is world-famous for its ability to train outstanding doctors and nurses and for its generosity in helping fellow countries on the route to progress,” says Dr Chan.

Made in AmeriCorps

A Lifetime Of Service

Mary Bruce and Ben Duda, AmeriCorps Alums Co-Executive Directors

Today’s post is by AmeriCorps Alums Co-Executive Directors,  Mary Bruce and Ben Duda, and originally appeared on Huffington Post on September 12, 2014.

Do you know any ruthless optimists? You know, the friends who just won’t take no for an answer and instead organize the best food drive you’ve ever seen? Know any rugged idealists, who can make a fundraiser out of nothing in no time to support disaster relief efforts? It’s always more than just “something,” it’s fabulous, and the local paper features them as “everyday heroes” because they made it look so easy.

If you know folks like these, you probably know humble, hard-working AmeriCorps Alums.

Today, at the White House and in all 50 states, the nation will celebrate the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps. Since 1994, nearly 900,000 individuals have joined AmeriCorps, providing more than 1.2 billion hours of service that’s done what it was…

An effort that recognizes that AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni

bring great skills and experience to the workplace

Atlanta, GA – As part of the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps commemoration at the White House, the President announced Employers of Service, a new cross-sector partnership that encourages employers to create recruitment, hiring, and advancement opportunities for alumni of AmeriCorps and Peace Corps. AmeriCorps Alums has worked with the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, and its partners, the Peace Corps and the Franklin Project of the Aspen Institute to launch this initiative.

The first group of Employers of National Service includes leading employers from private, public, and nonprofit sectors. Together, these companies and organizations will work to create recruitment, hiring, and advancement opportunities for individuals who…

A New Police Chief, Mosquitophobia and Back Road: Thursday, September 10, 2014

Petchary's Blog

It’s been an average sort of week, so far. A little rain here and there, and a few interesting things going on round town.

Our new Police Commissioner, Carl Williams. (Photo: Gleaner) Our new Police Commissioner, Carl Williams. (Photo: Gleaner)

We have a new Police Commissioner: On Monday morning we got our new Police Commissioner. His name is Carl Williams, and he has been a narcotics man for quite a few years – investigating, that is. He is fifty years old and joined the Jamaica Constabulary Force thirty years ago. He was the founding director of the famous Major Organized Crime and Anti-Corruption Task Force (MOCA) and also helped set up the Anti-Lottery Scam Task Force (which has been quite successful, especially recently; only today two Chinese nationals and a German were arrested). His appointment was no surprise – at least, not to me. I also believe he has the stamp of approval of our “international partners” – in…

Don’t vote.

Let the Republicans take control of the Senate.

This is the America you’ll get…..

—————-

‘Two GOP senators have vowed to stall any nonemergency
legislation taken up in the lame-duck session later this year’.

Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) warned
Democrats that trying to muscle through any substantial
legislation after the midterm elections would do lasting harm
to the chamber. They said they would vote against any unanimous
consent agreements on nonemergency legislation after Election
Day’.

Cruz is also publically pushing his House colleagues to oppose
a continuing resolution to fund the government until mid-
December, which would require lawmakers to reconvene after the
election’.

“Americans cannot trust politicians they can no longer hold
accountable at the ballot box,” Cruz said in a statement
Wednesday night. “The Continuing Resolution should, at a
minimum, fund government operations until after the new
Congress is sworn…
