Catalans defy Spanish government and call independence vote | World news | The Guardian

“Catalonia has the right to decide its political future,” said Mas. “We know that democracy is the most civilised way to resolve difficulties between nations.” The 9 November referendum would see two questions put to Catalans: whether Catalonia should be a state and, if so, whether it should be an independent state.

The central government has repeatedly insisted that any regional vote on independence would be illegal, pointing out that the country’s 1978 constitution means major questions must be put to all Spaniards and that only they can call a referendum. Barcelona, in turn, asserts that the non-binding nature of its regional vote allows it to take place within the legal confines of the constitution.

Somali militants stone woman to death | Reuters

Cowards and shameful to claim their acts have anything to do with religion – it is about power and their terrorizing their own people for their benefit!

The group, which pledges loyalty to al Qaeda, has waged an armed campaign to impose its strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law. Forced out of many areas of the east African country by African Union forces and the Somali army, al Shabaab is keen to show it has authority over areas it still controls.

Hundreds gathered to watch the killing of Safia Ahmed Jimale in an open field. The 33-year old mother was buried up to her shoulders and pelted with stones by masked al Shabaab fighters and local men.

Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer Goes Under Ebola Quarantine

“Of course we made the rule, so I am home for 21 days,” Dahn said Saturday. “I did it on my own. I told my office staff to stay at home for the 21 days. That’s what we need to do.”

Health officials, especially front-line doctors and nurses, are particularly vulnerable to Ebola, which is spread via the bodily fluids of infected patients. Earlier this month, WHO said more than 300 health workers had contracted Ebola in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the three most-affected countries. Nearly half of them had died

102-Year-Old Woman Celebrates Birthday At White Castle: Gothamist

Turpan has been eating at White Castle “at least once a month for more than 80 years,” and in a seemingly contradictory statement, asserts that eating properly is very important to a long life. At some point, she hopes to get around to learning the White Castle recipe.

Attack on Ghazni, Afghanistan: 100 killed, 15 beheaded – UPI.com

{Hope this is spin but world is getting crazier by the moment it seems at times}

A brutal Taliban attack Friday in eastern Afghanistan’s Ghazni province killed at least 100 people, with 15 beheaded, a provincial leader said.

The assault came after a week of fighting about 60 miles southwest of the capital of Kabul. About 700 Taliban militants, some claiming to represent the Islamic State, overran and burned several villages. Ahmadullah Ahmadi, provincial deputy governor, said at least 15 civilians were beheaded. He added that the insurgents burned houses, killed livestock and destroyed wheat crops.

The town of Ghazni, one of the communities attacked, lies on a road to Kabul, and could provide a strategic base of operations for attacks on the capital.

A deputy police chief said he requested help from Kabul in responding to the attacks, but “so far nothing has been done.” Ahmadi added local police were running out of ammunition, and the district could fall to the Taliban without air support from the government.

Runner’s High

Written Lines and Rhymes

When in life you hit a road

That seems just the ideal choice

Takes you where you want to go

And you want to dance, rejoice.

At first it beckons, clear and loud

‘This is the lane to all your dreams’

A straight directive, ‘Come on out,

I will take you to new extremes.

And all you need to do is this-

Just put all your heart and mind

Not follow this venture at bliss

You are strictly bound by time.’

The beckoning now is not so loud

A distant little background noise

Muffled by severe self doubt

And languor’s demanding voice.

But if you find a way to beat

The qualms that won’t let you by

And then go on with renewed heat

You’ll get to feel the Runner’s High.
