Give Greece Room to Maneuver – NYTimes.com

Greece’s lenders, most notably Germany, insist that they are defending important principles: a country must pay its debts, and the long-term success of the euro depends on everyone abiding by the rules.

That might sound fine in principle, but it rejects reality when the country and the euro are at stake, as they are in the negotiations between Greece and the 18 other eurozone governments, which came to a grinding halt on Monday. The dangerous possibility of a Greek default and a crisis in the euro system have become very real.

Pentagon spends more than $80m on drugs to tackle erectile dysfunction – Americas – World – The Independent

ED epidemic connected to vaccinations, aliens, excessive irony, lack of self-esteem?

What if they spent $80 million on reducing sexual predators and abusers in the military instead?

A report published in September found that the incidence rate of erectile dysfunction (ED) among active-duty personnel more than doubled from 2004 to 2014.

Researchers at the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Centre found that the overall incidence rate of ED climbed from 5.8 cases per 1,000 in 2004 to 12.6 cases in 2013, or more than 1 per cent of the total population, the newspaper said.

THE THIRD MAN IN THE GREAT SALUTE

Walkerjay's Blog

(With an UPDATE on August 19)
Most discussions of one of the most iconic images of the 20th century – the Human Rights Salute more popularly known as the Black Power Salute – focus on two men and neglect the fact that three  took part in that gesture. All three suffered for it and while the more famous two were eventually rehabilitated and hailed as heroes in their country, the third died unsung.

Tommie Smith, Peter Norman and John Carlos staged that defiant gesture at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.

Black Americans Smith and Carlos paid for it, of course, by being sent home immediately. But they were hailed as heroes by Blacks back home and eventually the nation was reconciled to the importance of what they did on 16 October 1968.

Norman, the Australian, was never accepted back fully by his country’s establishment.

Smith and Carlos honoured him when…

Interview with Greek Finance Minister Giannis Varoufakis – SPIEGEL ONLINE

I am arguing on an entirely objective level. I am saying that the austerity measures have done nothing and will do nothing to solve Greece’s problems; in fact, they only make things worse. I would therefore like to see Germany participate in drawing up a kind of Marshall Plan to rebuild Greece and the rest of the periphery. I believe that a Merkel Plan for Europe would be a wonderful development.

U.N. Describes Forced Disappearances in Mexico as “Generalised” | Inter Press Service

“The information received by the committee shows a context of generalised disappearances in a great part of the country, many of which could qualify as enforced disappearances,” says the report containing the committee’s concluding observations, presented Friday, Feb. 13.

It notes that disappearances were already occurring in December 2010, when the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance went into effect.

ISIS digs out old grievances to attack Copts

The Islamic State has released a video of the beheading of Egyptian Christians in Libya. The chilling video surfaced following an article published in the group’s magazine Dabiq showing photos of twenty-one Coptic Egyptians kidnapped by militants in Libya. According to the Dabiq article, the kidnapping was “in revenge for Kamilia Shehata, Wafaa Constantine, and other sisters who were tortured and murdered by the Coptic Church in Egypt.” No political reasons were mentioned in the report. Interestingly, that key assertion was overlooked by many reports and analyses of the attacks. In fact, when Jen Psaki, the spokesperson of the U.S. department of State was asked about the status of minorities in the Middle East, her reply was [the kidnapping] “is more about Libya than it is about Egypt.”

Ms. Psaki is wrong in her assessment. Although the logistics of the kidnapping were directly linked to the disintegration of…
