Total of Indiana residents testing positive for TB rises to 85 | Vaccine News

A spike in HIV and Heroine; now TB – what’s going on Indiana? The Indiana State Department of Health said on Friday that the number of positive tuberculosis (TB) skin-tested individuals has increased from 54 to 85.

As of Friday, all of these patients have been tied to a student recently diagnosed with TB. The student is now quarantined and receiving treatment.

In addition, a second TB patient, who reported having TB symptoms, as well as abnormal chest X-rays, has been identified. A third person without symptoms, but with an abnormal chest X-ray, also has been identified.

{Because, we think our needs come before “nature,” we justify nearly any type of cruelty and foolishness} The entire oper

ation, however, takes hours. To make sure the geese do not just fly away, Mr. Den Hertog limits his activities to their molting period, the few weeks each year when they shed old feathers on their wings to make way for new ones. Unable to fly, they gather in water for protection from predators.

In small boats, Mr. Den Hertog and Mr. Spitzen, the ranger, approached geese relaxing in a canal off the Lower Rhine from opposite sides, a pincer operation intended to drive them toward the river bank, where Mr. Den Hertog, his son and other helpers had set up a kind of chute to funnel the geese to the gas chamber.

A few, as if sensing doom, appeared to be suddenly gripped by wild panic and somehow found a will to fly, fleeing before it was too late on their sparsely feathered wings.

“I love geese. They are very smart,” Mr. Den Hertog said, saying he had been fascinated as a boy with catching animals in the countryside and had spent years perfecting his goose extermination system.

David Cameron (aka: the 1% troll): British bill of rights will ‘safeguard legacy’ of Magna Carta | Law | The Guardian

In a speech at Runnymede Green King John Cameron will heap praise on the influence of Magna Carta worldwide in spreading freedom and the rule of law, and say every Briton should be proud of its influence. But he will stray into controversy by saying that “the good name of human rights has sometimes become distorted and devalued”.

He will say: “For centuries, Magna Carta has been quoted to help promote human rights and alleviate suffering all around the world. But here in Britain ironically, the place where those ideas were first set out, the good name of human rights has sometimes been distorted and devalued. It falls to us in this generation to restore the reputation of those rights – and their critical underpinning of our legal system. It is our duty to safeguard the legacy, the idea, the momentous achievement of those barons. And there couldn’t be a better time to reaffirm that commitment than on an anniversary like this.”

Unison boss to tell government that efforts to crush unions will fail

Dave Prentis also attacks proposed legislation making strikes unlawful unless 50% of those entitled to vote take part in a ballot as vindictive

The boss of the largest public sector union will tell the government this week that its efforts to crush union power will fail, after a successful recruitment drive in newly privatised businesses.

Dave Prentis, the general secretary of Unison, said an exodus of members following steep job cuts in the public sector had been all but made up for by new members recruited from businesses taking on public sector contracts.

Republican Party presidential hopeful Chris Christie calls for war with China: Shanghaiist

Christie has been trying to set himself apart from other candidates in the crowded Republican Party field. His belligerent rhetoric on China looks like an effort to win over neo-conservatives with an eye on foreign policy.

While sabre-rattling is all well and good on the campaign trail, that is assuming he decides to throw his hat into the ring, it is another matter altogether to come up with a coherent strategy by which China can be confronted. The Obama administration has been trying and failing for several years now.

That being said, China bashing is almost obligatory for presidential candidates these days. Late last month, Republican candidate Carly Fiorina declared that the Chinese “can’t innovate” and aren’t “terribly imaginative.” And let’s not forget Mitt Romney’s determination to label China a currency manipulator.

I have a news-led moral compass and thought I no longer cared, the event in question being over a week ago. It turned out, I did care; the expiration of my objection to misogyny is longer than 11 days. It is a simple fact that using the word “woman” is different to using the word “man”: it is scornful. To use it domestically is simple power play, the establishment of the male as superior by birth; to use it in public life has the additional intimation that the woman doesn’t belong in that sphere, that her presence is only suffered for as long as she knows her place. If Salmond thinks that he’s identified some alternative Scottish usage, he should try to imagine himself using the word as a compliment. You might well call somebody an intelligent woman, but you would never address her “woman” in the expression of that point. It’s subtle, but simultaneously deeply obvious, right the way across the English-speaking world.
