Brazil in full carnival swing despite spread of Zika virus
More than a million revellers turn out in cities across the country for annual event, even as virus continues to dominate global headlines
One of the most significant health scares in recent history is not keeping Brazilians from their annual carnival revelry, with millions taking to the streets despite the spread of the mosquito-borne Zika virus.
Street processions, block parties and the televised, big-budget parades that are the hallmark of the festival moved into their second day on Sunday, even as Brazilian health officials continued to grapple with an outbreak that may have infected as many as 1.5 million people and could be linked to serious health conditions in more than 4,000 infants and unborn children.
Cuomo Moves To Ban Homophobic “Conversion Therapy”
Governor Cuomo has announced a series of new measures aimed at banning “conversion therapy,” a psychiatric pseudo-treatment that claims to change a homosexual patient’s sexual orientation, turning them straight. “Conversion therapy is a hateful and fundamentally flawed practice that is counter to everything this state stands for,” Cuomo said. “We will not allow the misguided and the intolerant to punish LGBT young people for simply being who they are.” [ more › ]
Indian Point Groundwater Has “Alarming” Levels Of Radioactivity
Groundwater at the Indian Point nuclear plant has tested for “alarming” levels of radioactive contamination, spurring Governor Cuomo to call for a new investigation. Three of the 40 monitoring wells at the power plant were found to be contaminated with tritium, yielding a 65,000 increase in radioactivity, according to a report by the plant’s owner, Entergy Corporation. Between 50 and 100 rioters stormed through the neighborhood of Neukölln in the early hours of Sunday morning, setting fire to 20 cars and at throwing at least one stone at a police car. The previous night, between 20 and 40 masked rioters on bicycles burned 28 cars and smashed windows in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin.
