H5N8 appears in Nigeria, South Korea | CIDRAP

Does anyone really need a doctorate in agronomy to understand that H5N8 influenza among “turkeys” in Nigeria explains why avian influenza is a global poultry killer and one of the most probably future sources for a killing human influenza that will make the 1918 flu looks like child’s play?

If someone talked about the turkey industry in Russia, China, Nigeria and India 30 years ago, you’d still be laughing and gasping for breath. Now because the race for profit from the industrialized poultry market knows no boundaries and has no understanding of how pandemic viruses develop, we may all soon be gasping for breath!

Donald Trump mocked for ‘unpresidented’ tweet lambasting China for ‘stealing’ US Navy drone: Shanghaiist

So, China’s navy seized an unmanned underwater vehicle belong to the United States navy in the South China Sea, and what does one do as president-elect of the United States? Donald Trump, as he usually does, took to Twitter on Saturday but had to delete his tweet when he found it going viral for all the wrong reasons.”China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters – rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented [sic] act,” wrote the property tycoon, apparently without consulting his spellcheck.Trump did not delete the tweet until an hour later, replacing it with a new post that included a correct spelling of the word ‘unprecedented’. By then, however, #unpresidented had become the top trending topic on Twitter as critics skewered the soon-to-be 45th president of the United States for the unintentionally punny misspelling.

vintage everyday: Titanic Survivor’s Letter Reveals Harrowing New Perspective on the Tragedy of the ‘Unsinkable Ship’

Towards eleven o’clock: Mrs. Stone and I went to bed.Three quarters of an hour later, as the liner was cruising at full speed, a terrifying shock threw us out of bed.We were intending to find out what was happening, when a passing officer told us “It is nothing, return to your cabin.” I answered “Listen to that loud noise, it sounds like water is flowing into the ship.”Upon our return to the cabin I saw that our [female] neighbor from across the passageway had gone back to bed.Her daughter arrived in a panic, yelling “Mommy, quick quick, get up it’s very serious.”I helped Mrs. Stone to dress, she took her lifebelt and told me “come quickly.”I was trembling, and still in my dressing gown, I took a coat, my lifebelt, and followed her on deck.

From IT specialist to guerilla fighter: Estonia’s citizen army gears up to deter Vladimir Putin’s war machine – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Estonians eye Russia’s annexation of Crimea and United States President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about reining in NATO spending, which provided a bulwark against Russian expansion during and after the Cold War.Now thousands of Estonians, many without previous military experience, have flocked towards the EDL for specialised conflict training. They learn to fire weapons, recognise Russian armoured vehicles, and live in the country’s vast forests. Some of the more experienced recruits are given instructions on how to make roadside bombs. Others learn how to run a field kitchen capable of feeding thousands of people. The EDL chief, Commander Meelis Kiili, puts it simply — “if you want peace prepare for war”.

FBI backs CIA view that Russia intervened to help Trump win election – The Washington Post

FBI Director James B. Comey and Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. have backed a CIA assessment that Russia intervened in the 2016 election in part to help Donald Trump win the presidency, according to U.S. officials.Comey’s support for the CIA’s conclusion suggests that the leaders of the three agencies are in agreement on Russian intentions, contrary to suggestions by some lawmakers that the FBI disagreed with the CIA.“Earlier this week, I met separately with (Director) FBI James Comey and DNI Jim Clapper, and there is strong consensus among us on the scope, nature, and intent of Russian interference in our presidential election,” CIA Director John Brennan said in a message to the agency’s workforce, according to U.S. officials who have seen the message.

Two Sex Shop Employees Ward Off Alleged Robber With Dildos: LAist – Tough Dildo Tossers in San Berdo!

A man, seen in surveillance video as wearing a gray hoodie and holding what appears to be a gun, entered Lotions & Lace in San Bernardino on Wednesday night at about 9:45 p.m., just 15 minutes before the shop closed. He was seen striding through the racks of lingerie to the counter where he immediately encountered two female employees and demanded the cash from their till. But, the alleged robber got more than he bargained for when one employee—identified by ABC 7 only as Amy—decided she didn’t have time for his shenanigans.”I just thought he was trying to be funny, to scare us. But then I saw the gun and it was like, really? I don’t have time for this,” she said.Amy suspected that the gun he was carrying was a fake, and was not scared. She instead described herself as “really irritated.” The video depicts the two employees yelling at the man and flinging a variety of sex toys at him until he leaves the shop.
