Stonewall Jackson’s grandsons: “The monuments must go.”

One thing that bonds our extended family, besides our common ancestor, is that many have worked, often as clergy and as educators, for justice in their communities. While we do not purport to speak for all of Stonewall’s kin, our sense of justice leads us to believe that removing the Stonewall statue and other monuments should be part of a larger project of actively mending the racial disparities that hundreds of years of white supremacy have wrought. We hope other descendants of Confederate generals will stand with us.As cities all over the South are realizing now, we are not in need of added context. We are in need of a new context—one in which the statues have been taken down.Respectfully,William Jackson ChristianWarren Edmund ChristianGreat-great-grandsons of Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson

‘Please stop!’ Brutal killing of a student in Philippines drug war sparks nationwide anger | World news | The Guardian

Duterte has lashed out at any criticism. He warned the European Union not to “fuck with us” after the European parliament passed a resolution expressing “grave concern over credible reports” that Philippine police were engaged in extrajudicial killings, a claim officers strongly deny. Despite the criticism, Duterte has remained a popular leader and polls have shown continued domestic support for his war on drugs. But the death of Santos appears to be a turning point. Three government bodies, the department of justice, the senate, and the Commission on Human Rights, launched investigations.Santos’s last words have become viral on social media and on Monday protesters gathered at the People’s Power Monument in Manila to voice their outrage.

Radical Islamic indoctrination: “They used to meet in a van and talk for hours and hours” | In English | EL PAÍS

He said it was last June during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan the young men “lost their fear of dying. I think they already knew what they going to do. From that time on they started being really sweet to their mother and families. They were at home a lot and were very attentive. If their mother had a problem, they were there straight away to help,” the relative added. This behavior has been often noted among radicalized young Muslims before an attack. However, none of these changes raised the alarm among the Muslim community in Ripoll. The  families and friends of the young men did not speak out either.“We thought it was a stage – that they were growing up. We even thought there was something positive about it.”In the final few months of their lives, the young men even became less strict about their religion – a practice known as taqiyya, which involves hiding religious beliefs – in this case to avoid raising suspicion.

Fighting neo-nazis and the future of free expression – IFEX (Fascists, NAZIs, and ISIS will not hesitate to suppress free speech!)

“All fair-minded people must stand against the hateful violence and aggression that seems to be growing across our country. But we must also recognize that on the Internet, any tactic used now to silence neo-Nazis will soon be used against others, including people whose opinions we agree with.”

Sewing Seeds of Hate: Donald Trump’s Unforgivable Disgrace – SPIEGEL ONLINE

In the answers he then gave to questions from reporters — more of a fit of rage than a press conference — he blasted the so-called “alt-left,” saying it was just as bad as the white supremacists, many of whom refer to themselves as the “alt-right.” It was a comment that didn’t just demonize the counterdemonstrators, it also trivialized the violence displayed by the neo-Nazis. Trump spoke of “blame on both sides” and claimed that among the hate-filled white nationalists and anti-Semites, there were also many people who were simply there to peacefully protest the removal of the statue of General Robert E. Lee. The press conference lasted just over 20 minutes, but by the time it had ended, it was clear that the president was indeed guilty of playing down the actions of neo-Nazis.Two former presidents, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, issued a joint statement condemning hatred “in all forms.” Five of the country’s top military leaders saw a need to issue clear statements condemning racism, in direct opposition to their commander-in-chief.
