Locals say unarmed men were banana farmers and were killed trying to flee during operation against al-Shabaab extremists

US special forces have been accused of complicity in the deaths of civilians after five unarmed men were killed during a raid by Somali troops last week that they “aided and assisted”.

The casualties were described as banana farmers by local inhabitants, and appear to have been shot while trying to flee the site of the operation, which officials say targeted commanders of the al-Shabaab extremist group.

Corrupt Guatemalan officials find help from an unlikely source: Marco Rubio | World news | The Guardian – Russians have bought Rubio too!

The Florida senator said that his decision was motivated by the case of a Russian exile family convicted by Cicig on charges of identity fraud. The Bitkovs were prosecuted as part of a broader investigation into high-level corruption at the immigration office which has so far resulted in more than 40 convictions.

Trump and May have one thing in common: they are incapable of reason | Polly Toynbee | Opinion | The Guardian

As home secretary, Theresa May introduced an irrational, random cap of 1,600 tier 2 skilled visas a month, regardless of how urgently skills are needed. Start with the NHS, in obvious crisis, where 100,000 posts are unfilled. Why bar 1,518 doctors? Brexit is causing what the Royal College of Nursing calls a haemorrhage of nurses; more are leaving than joining, with new arrivals denied visas. Whatever your view of intractable anti-immigration politics, I can find no pollster who finds the public against recruiting doctors and other highly skilled people to add to the UK talent pool. This is a bee in May’s bonnet alone. What is she thinking? Her visa cap inflicts maximum harm in engineering, IT and all the industries Brexiters claim we will sell around the world. Recruitment to high-powered jobs of people from outside the EU is rising sharply, because the Brexit vote is deterring EU applicants.

Trump’s warning to Kim Jong-un: make a deal or suffer same fate as Gaddafi

F%%%ing idiot!

Asked about ‘Libya model’, Trump says: ‘That model … was total decimation. That model would take place if we don’t make a deal’

Donald Trump has threatened Kim Jong-un with the same fate as Muammar Gaddafi if the North Korean leader “doesn’t make a deal” on his nuclear weapons programme.

The US president issued the threat at the White House when he was asked about the recent suggestion by his national security adviser, John Bolton, that the “Libyan model” be a template for dealing with North Korea at a summit between Trump and Kim planned for 12 June in Singapore.

Thursday Open Thread | Mueller issues grand jury subpoena to Roger Stone adviser

Special counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed a social media specialist who previously worked for Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone, according to a report.

A lawyer for social media and Twitter expert Jason Sullivan told Reuters that two subpoenas were delivered last week to Sullivan’s lawyers.

The report says the subpoenas seem to indicate that Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election is partly focusing on Stone and his communications with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Stone has made contradicting statements about whether he knew in advance that WikiLeaks was going to publish a trove of hacked Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails.

He appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee last year and denied collusion between those close to Trump and Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“I am aware of no evidence whatsoever of collusion by the Russian state or anyone in the Trump campaign,” he told reporters in September.

President Trump has also denied collusion between his campaign and Russia, often referring to Mueller’s probe as a witch hunt.

Sullivan told Reuters that he worked as Stone’s chief strategist on the Trump campaign, and currently is in charge of Cyphoon.com.

Sullivan told Reuters that he helped Stone and the Trump campaign create Twitter “swarms” that would boost social media support for the candidate. One strategy document obtained by Reuters that Sullivan prepared referenced “The Age of Weaponized Social Media.”

Reuters cited an Election Day tweet from Trump, which garnered more than 343,000 retweets.

Sullivan told the outlet that swarm from that tweet contributed to overcoming a surge in pro-Clinton social media posts.

Mueller has subpoenaed Sullivan to appear before a grand jury on May 18 and to turn over documents and electronic information.

Trump Calls Some Unauthorized Immigrants ‘Animals’ in Rant – The New York Times

The president’s language and his focus on California drew a sharp rebuke from Jerry Brown, the state’s Democratic governor. “Trump is lying on immigration, lying about crime and lying about the laws of California,” Mr. Brown said in a statement. “Flying in a dozen Republican politicians to flatter him and praise his reckless policies changes nothing. We, the citizens of the fifth-largest economy in the world, are not impressed.”

Report: NRA may have Kremlin ties | News | DW | 16.05.2018

“The Committee has obtained a number of documents that suggest the Kremlin used the National Rifle Association as a means of accessing and assisting Mr. Trump and his campaign.” They point to two specific individuals, including Alexander Torshin, deputy head of Russia’s Central Bank, as being involved in the use of the NRA as a back channel between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. The FBI is reportedly probing whether any of the $30 million dollars the NRA donated to the Trump campaign came from Russia.
