Wednesday is the Sami national day in Sweden, raising the profile of the indigenous group which lives across an area of the north stretching from Norway to Russia.

Sweden now has a Sami national assembly and broadcasts radio in Sami, but the way of life for Sami people is still not fully protected.

The country has still not ratified a UN convention on indigenous rights from 1991, despite being a driving force behind the initiative at the UN level.

Despite weeks of protest in Hungary, it’s clear now the PM can rely on support within the EU to shield him from criticism

As a Hungarian living in Berlin, I’d watched the protests against Viktor Orbán from afar – until, like almost everyone I know, I went home for Christmas. Recent months have been very special for many people in my native country. Thousands have been demonstrating against the government, the ruling party Fidesz and its leader. Among the cheerful crowds in Budapest, I felt the significance of these events for myself too.

Tusk warns of ‘special place in hell’ for those who backed Brexit without a plan

EU leader also takes aim at Jeremy Corbyn and says there is no new offer to UK

The EU’s frustration with Westminster erupted into the open as Donald Tusk warned of a “special place in hell” for politicians who promoted Brexit “without even a sketch of a plan”, just 24 hours before his crunch meeting with Theresa May in Brussels.

The European council president insisted that the EU was not “making any new offer” to Britain, and demanded a “realistic suggestion” from the prime minister on how to end the impasse.
