Thousands were brutalized and hundreds killed during Brazil’s 21-year military rule – a period lauded by the current president

After they were arrested by military policemen in 1977 for leaving leftwing pamphlets outside a Brazilian factory near São Paulo, Márcia Paes and Celso Brambilla were tortured for 10 days straight.

“Where are the weapons?” their captors repeatedly asked them, as they attempted to link them to leftist guerrilla groups who had taken up arms against Brazil’s military rulers.

This is DELIBERATE. This is CRUEL. This is WHO THEY ARE. And, I hope folks wake up to this fact. These are non-White citizens, and so, in this Administration’s eyes, they don’t count. What is happening to the citizens of Puerto Rico SHOULD NOT be happening in this country. Period. Once again, I will repeat, there is no middle ground here. This is the cruelty that his part and parcel of this Administration. There’s nothing here, in this cruelty, where people can ‘ meet in the middle’. They want to kill American Citizens…We do not. I ask those Puerto Ricans on the mainland—are you registered to vote? Do you see why your vote matters?
