“California reports record daily increase in coronavirus cases as it becomes worst-hit state in the U.S. “more than 12,800 coronavirus cases on Tuesday”

California reported more than 12,800 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, the highest-reported daily tally the state has recorded so far, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday.

California has now surpassed New York in total confirmed Covid-19 cases — more than 409,500 cases as of Wednesday — making it the state with the most cases in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins University data. However, New York has reported more than four times the number of deaths, according to Hopkins.

Study: COVID-19 antibodies decay quickly after mild illness | CIDRAP

Implications for ‘immunity passports,’ herd immunity, vaccines
The researchers said that their findings mean that people with mild illness—that is, most people with COVID-19—may not have long-lasting immunity to it, although they can’t extrapolate beyond their 90-day observation period, after which the decay rate would be expected to slow. The results also dim hopes for “immunity passports,” which some governments have suggested would allow recovered COVID-19 patients to return to work or travel on the presumption that they were immune against reinfection, and well as for lasting herd immunity, in which at least 60% of people are immune after recovering from infection. “The results call for caution regarding antibody-based ‘immunity passports,’ herd immunity, and perhaps vaccine durability, especially in light of short-lived immunity against common human coronaviruses,” the authors wrote. “Further studies will be needed to define a quantitative protection threshold and rate of decline of antiviral antibodies beyond 90 days.”

A Huge Wall Street Scandal Just Exploded In Kentucky

The new suit from Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office also specifically targets Stephen Schwarzman — a Republican billionaire who is one of the largest financial supporters of Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump’s political machine. Schwarzman has donated $10 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC affiliated with McConnell, and $3 million to America First Action, a super PAC backing Trump, this election cycle.

The suit alleges that the firms misled the state into funneling retirees’ money into investments that were “secretive, opaque, illiquid, impossible to properly monitor or accurately value, high-fee, high-risk gambles with no historical record of performance.” The suit asserts that these were “absolutely unsuitable investments for a pension fund in the particular situation [Kentucky] was in, and violated the applicable laws, codes and standards.”

If the case moves forward, it could tear open the veil of secrecy surrounding the private equity and hedge fund industries, which control hundreds of billions of dollars of retirement funds across the world.

Federal agents retreat to Portland base as protesters control streets | US news | The Guardian

Those detained said they were dragged into the courthouse without being told why they were being arrested or by whom and then suddenly let go without any official record of being held. It smacked of police state tactics. So did some of the violence meted out by federal agents who looked more like an occupying army in a war zone.

But if the intent was to intimidate the protesters into abandoning the few square blocks of downtown Portland under their control, it backfired spectacularly.

Methane leaking from Antarctica sea floor, bad for global heating – Business Insider

The release of methane from ice is also considered one of the tipping points in climate change, where the effects of rising temperatures cannot be stopped or reversed.

But, until now, no active leak of methane had been recorded in Antarctica.
