Trump says he didn’t confront Putin about Russia paying for Taliban attacks on US soldiers because he considers it ‘fake news’

Asked why he didn’t mention it on a call with Putin on Thursday, he said: “That was a phone call to discuss other things, and frankly that’s an issue that many people said was fake news.” US intelligence officials concluded earlier this year that Russia’s military intelligence agency did indeed pay Taliban-linked militants to kill NATO troops in Afghanistan, including US forces. Their findings were first reported by The New York Times in June. Two current Taliban commanders and one former commander confirmed the practice to Insider in July.

The anti-racism protests in Portland appeared to be dwindling in size until Donald Trump sent in federal officers to confront them, reports the Guardian’s Chris McGreal

Anti-racism protesters have repeatedly clashed with federal officers in the US city of Portland, Oregon in recent days. They have continued nightly protests ever since the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police in May.

The Guardian’s Chris McGreal is in Portland and tells Anushka Asthana that to understand what is happening in the city you have to look back at Oregon’s history – and at the politics of the present. Portland is one of the least diverse cities in the US and has a history of segregation and racially divisive policies. But it is also home to thousands of young people incensed by racial inequality and the politics of Donald Trump.

78% of COVID-19 patients show signs of heart damage after recovery

Overall, the team found that 78 patients had abnormal imaging findings. Findings included raised myocardial native T1 (73 patients), raised myocardial native T2 (60 patients), myocardial late gadolinium enhancement (32 patients) and pericardial enhancement (22 patients). Three patients underwent a biopsy after severe abnormalities were detected; “active lymphocytic inflammation” was present in these patients, but “no evidence of any viral genome.”
