Banning TikTok: Are We Reproducing the Chinese Internet in America? – BIG by Matt Stoller (Facebok’s role in all this)
Facebook is in fact the reason we have a TikTok problem to begin with. When Twitter launched a TikTok-like product Vine years before, Facebook actively killed the product by refusing to let Vine access its APIs on the same terms other corporations got. Mark Zuckerberg personally made the call to shut off access to Vine, and Twitter eventually shut the product down. Then, Facebook allowed TikTok to advertise massively on its platform, at a time Zuckerberg was currying favor with the Chinese Communist Party to try to get into the Chinese market. In other words, Zuckerberg killed an American competitor using anti-competitive means, and promoted a Chinese competitor for his own business interests.
Now we have a TikTok problem, but that’s because policymakers refused to enforce anti-monopoly rules against tech giants. Or as Republican Congressman Ken Buck put it to Gilad Edelman in Wired on his worries about big tech monopolies being slothful,
“The reality is, the way we got to a dominant position in the tech sector is because we encouraged innovation. And if we stop encouraging innovation, we may dominate for the next five or 10 years in particular areas, but 20 years down the road, we won’t be dominant.”

Nord Stream 2: US senators threaten German port with ‘crushing’ sanctions
They conveniently forget that Senators can’t conduct foreign policy – Even if the President is asleep, it’s the President’s job not, not theirs.

Three Republican senators have ordered Murkan Port on the island of Rugen to stop assisting Russian vessels constructing the final sections of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
A Child Care Center Followed The COVID Safety Guidelines. It Still Had An Outbreak: LAist – (But there are still governors who want to force kids to go to unready schools!)
But despite all of their best efforts, five teachers at Centro Alegria have tested positive for coronavirus in recent weeks. And while the center’s prevention efforts meant it didn’t have to shut down entirely, it was left scrambling to figure out how to continue to operate safely.
The outbreak illustrates the difficulties child care providers face in interpreting and implementing differing guidelines from state and local agencies that they often find confusing. Providers say they’re overwhelmed by the amount of information out there.
“When everything got shut down, I had a lot of providers calling me. And they were like, ‘so what are we supposed to do?'” said longtime child care provider and union organizer Tonia McMillian. “And I told them I don’t know.”
