LeBron James Launches A Campaign to Push for More Poll Workers – The New York Times

The project, a collaboration with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, aims to recruit young people to serve at polling locations in Black communities in swing states, including Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida and Ohio. The effort will involve poll worker recruitment, a paid advertising campaign and a corporate partnership program that will encourage employees to volunteer as poll workers.

Election officials throughout the country have reported a shortage of poll workers to staff in-person voting sites amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has upended every facet of American life — including the electoral process.

Thousands of Palestinian homes in occupied al-Quds face demolition threat: PA official | PNN

Israeli officials have issued nearly 650 demolition orders against Palestinian-owned structures in Jerusalem since the beginning of the current year.

Israel’s demolition of Palestinian homes and structures in occupied Jerusalem and elsewhere in the West Bank are part of a plan by the regime to expand settlements and force Palestinians from their homes and land.

Israeli officials say demolition orders are carried out because the Palestinian-owned structures have been built without the required construction permits.

Palestinians, on the other hand, argue such authorization is routinely denied, forcing unlicensed building.

According to Israeli rights group B’tselem, Israel has demolished hundreds of houses over the years as part of Israel’s “collective punishment” policy, leaving thousands of Palestinians homeless.

Factory strike leader and Tikhanovskaya aide held as Lukashenko releases video of himself armed with rifle

Belarusian authorities arrested two opposition leaders on Monday, as a showdown between the authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko, and a broad coalition of protesters continued into a third week.

Police detained Sergei Dylevsky, a factory worker who has become a prominent strike leader, and Olga Kovalkova, an aide to Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the opposition politician who stood against Lukashenko in elections earlier this month but was forced to flee the country after the vote.

Stray dog retrieves puppies from swollen river, finds new home in South-west China, East Asia News & Top Stories – The Straits Times

The mother dog jumped into Minjiang River, in Sichuan Province, after police dissuaded human rescuers from trying to retrieve the two puppies as the risk was too high.

At that very moment, the mother dog took the three rescued puppies to a safer place and ran back to the shore. “The mother dog appeared very anxious, as it saw the remaining stranded puppies. It bypassed the police, jumped into the river and carried its fourth puppy to the shore in its mouth after a persistent search,” citizens at the site were quoted as saying. In quick succession, the mother dog returned and carried its last puppy through the raging current of the river and set it down on the shore.

As all the six dogs arrived safely ashore, rounds of applause erupted from the onlookers.

At present, the mother and its puppies have been adopted by Ms Ren Hongqiong, a citizen of Pengshan.

“I was at the scene when the dog-rescuing mission was conducted. The dogs were soaked through. I took them home as I am a dog lover, and also I have a yard to raise them in,” said Ms Ren, adding that she named the mother dog Wangwang.

After learning the story, the public security bureau of Pengshan reached out to Ms Ren to help her register her new pets.
